1. Forest of Dreams
This was written by Nathan Page and is available at his site (on the links page). It's fairly tough, and it's rather like a prequel to Forest of Doom (#3).
2. The Horror of Craggen Rock
Another Nathan Page creation, this is a prequel to Citadel of Chaos (#2). Fairly good, if a little unorthodox of rules.
This isn't strictly an FF adventure as it has no SKILL, STAMINA, LUCK etc. in it. It's not even set in the FF world, but anyway... who cares?
This was my (unfinished) first attempt at making a full 400 paragraph FF adventure. It is on no account finished, I'm currently writing one with a thicker plot. Have a look anyway.
5. Voice of the Sun
This adventure is only just emerging from the Planning stage as I am writing it. The plot-line is very thick and imaginative, if a little bloodthirsty.
Well... The player, whose character is meant to be aged around 42, but still very healthy, and look a bit like Sam Neill did in "Merlin", has just come back to his home town of Fort Fearon on the Femphrey/Gallantarian border after a hugely successful quest with a pile of cash. What he doesn't know, is that while he's away, a group of religious fundamentalists have taken over the country and declared war on Gallantaria. Fort Fearon is in ruins and the character vows, "I'LL SEE YOU FADE INTO NOTHING!!!!" or something like that, and sides with the Gallantarians.
Here's the twist - The fundamentalists in question worship Glantanka, an ostensibly good deity. Unfortunately they take their religion to ridiculous extremes and set out on a holy war to punish "the infidel Gallantarians, Lendlelanders, Bricish and Ruddlestonians". They are led by a seemingly all-powerful prophet named "The Voice of the Sun", and also have a group called the "Divine Cleansing Fire" whose job it is to root out heresy and blasphemy. The player becomes the No.1 target of this bunch as he/she infiltrates their "Grand Temple to the Fire in the Sky" (where do I get these names?) and (hopefully) wipes out the Voice of the Sun. His supporters all lose hope at the death of their leader and surrender, but the whole situation of the Old World will be reset by this adventure.
Notes - The atmosphere in this adventure should be that of "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU". Give the player an "Unorthodoxy Rating" which indicates how much attention the player has drawn to himself. The player should feel really paranoid as he walks down a side-street alone during a compulsory prayer session, or whatever.
Also - The Voice Of The Sun is more than a religious fundamentalist. He is, in fact, the Snake Demon Ishtra in disguise, or better still, a minor Dark God who everyone thought was still stuck in the Void since after the 1st Battle. But this Dark God escaped and wants to sweep his evil armies across the Old World and pin the blame on followers of a Good deity. There should also be Unorthodoxy Tests whenever the player bumps into a member of the DCF and a Time Track score so the player has to balance between hurrying to wipe out the Voice of the Sun, as he is planning a massive purge of the "Infidels" within days, and attempting to appear "normal", i.e. The player has skived off a compulsory service and has slipped down a side street. He is spotted by a patrol and challenged. Either he can run for it and hope to outrun them, in which case his Time will not go up but his Unorthodoxy will. On the other hand, he can "come quietly" and the guards'll forget about it, but he'll be escorted back to the service and this will eliminate precious time.
This adventure has been in the making since August 2000 and is still nowhere near finished - but hey, Stephen King wrote The Gunslinger over a 12 year period off and on!
6. Outsider
By Gavin Mitchell, and available at Jonny Hughson's site, "The Black Tower", Outsider is the best homegrown FF available today.
It would never be published in the actual series though, because of its subject matter: you are a top assassin, Black Aria, in the criminal underworld of the Old World city of Altgarten, Perrereich. And there is no specific ending. However, it does feature whore-houses, substance abuse, illegal gambling, blood sports, necromancy, very good writing, and some very interesting humour. Pick me another FF, published or not, in which the player can have his 'nads bitten off! (P/gr 551)
The mission is basically twofold - you must determine the identity of your father, and find your lover, Eddora, who ran off without trace suddenly. And slowly things unfold about your past... it's very, very, very, complex and I will not spoil it for you here. But needless to say, there are lots of endings, some of which are better than others.
It also features some very original ideas - castration, for one, pastiches of various trashy sci-fi fiction, Baggy Anne the - emm, full-bodied - whore who does it by the dockyards, and also a nasty twist at the end...
Read it for yourself - in my opinion, it rivals Creature of Havoc.
7. Passages of Peril
This short FF Adventure was sent to me by John E. Churchill in January of 2005 (I think!) It numbers 100 entries. In it, you are hired by the townspeople of Oakbridge to take car of a gian named Grimbald who is terrorising them.
Now this homegrown FF is as far away from Outsider as is physically possible. It's a lovely nostalgic throwback to the early days of "dungeon crawling" FF Gamebooks, right down to the mathematical puzzles/riddles apparent in such adventures, and as such I love it for that, although those who prefer their adventures a little more complex and multi-layered might not think the same. Still, however, it may be short, but it's very well written in my opinion; and hopefully we could see more from this particular enthusiast in the future.
