1961
The December tape has been in wide circulation for many years. It was actually the first bootleg ever produced. It was released on a 2 LP set in 1969, and went by the title 'Great White Wonder' It has been available under various titles a countless number of times in the decades that followed. The quality has generally been very good, and the performance tells the story of a fresh faced boy just out of high school, who had the energy and natural 'world-traveled weariness' quality that would forever change the world. It is absolutely required material for even the smallest collection. The May tape has never enjoyed the same popularity. Partly because of the low quality of the original recording, and partly due to a remarkably uninspired performance. One of the first times that a young Bob would hear himself on tape, nerves, inexperience, and limited repertoire would result in, at best, this mediocre offering. The tape is significant, however, not only for its historical importance, but also as a standard to compare the December tape. The interim shows the explosive growth from a kid with a guitar to a phenomenon.

The news of the toppling of Salvador Allende’s Chilean government was in newspapers all around the world. When Allende died in the coup on 11 September 1973, protest singer Victor Jara and others were arrested and held captive at a sports stadium. Jara died on 12 Sept after being tortured by his captors. Almost all his master recordings were destroyed by the Chilean secret police. What remains are copies smuggled out of the country during the time of General Pinochet’s rule, and pressed into records and CDs. Phil Ochs organised a benefit for Chile and the original bill for the show was Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Dave Van Ronk and others who were considered second or even third ranked folk singers. There was no star power. When Bob Dylan heard that few tickets were sold and that the show was in danger of being cancelled, he lend his considerable weight to the bill. It drew in the crowd. By this time, Bob Dylan was hardly a protest singer in the same vein as Victor Jara. According to Clinton Heylin’s book, Behind The Shades, he was just helping an old friend. Unfortunately Bob Dylan arrived for the show well ahead of time, and passed the hours by drinking wine and chatting with old friends. By the time he took the stage for his brief 15-minute set he was virtually legless - literally - and the performance remains probably the most excruciating of all his many guest appearances… And now for posterity, here is the entire show one evening in New York City. This audience recording is close to the stage but has its limitations. It sounds like a mono recording.

The complete circulating outtakes, for the most part in absolutely pristine quality. Brought together like this they form a formidable body. The outtakes provide insight into the development of the songs towards their final unsurpassable incarnations. It's captivating to hear the sharp edge of pain rising a little closer to the surface.

This powerful concert is a near flawless audience recording preserving Dylan's fabled 1979 Warfield residency in all it's glory. This gospel show explodes with vocal passion to be found in few other Dylan periods: time for am official release from these concerts as part of the Bootleg Series?
Massey Hall, Toronto, ON, 19 April 1980
Saenger Performing Arts Center, New Orleans, LA November 10,
1981Dylan delivers a knock-out performance. The gospel material is powerful and biting without a condescending edge. The older standards are performed with a new fire and passion that includes them among the best live versions to date. Dylan stumbles on the lyrics once or twice, but adds new lines as well that more than compensate. The vocals are crisp are over the top out front and in your face. The music is tight, well mixed, and well performed. This is a re-release of the 1992 KTS CD entitled 'Stadiums of the Damned'. A great release from the start, this unknown Label has gone KTS one better by eliminating much of the white noise, and bringing out the music a tad more to give the CD a smoother, more natural feel.

Fairly good quality on this impressive four CD
set.... but the less than perfect sound quality can be forgiven somewhat when
one looks over the set list.

The quality of the recordings is superb and the performances are, well, words can't describe. It's like
trying to describe one of David Beckham's best games - they are all so good but when he takes it to another level you are left speechless. The bonus tracks sustain the
heights attained the previous night. Do yourself a favour and get it.

August 24 Show: Absolutely Sweet Marie, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, Tough Mama, You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, Silvio, Roving Gambler (acoustic), Tangled Up in Blue, Cocaine Blues (acoustic), Watching The River Flow, Blind Willie McTell, Highway 61 Revisited, Like A Rolling Stone, Forever Young, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
This great 3 CD set from Scorpio contains two entire shows from Wolftrap. Perfect quality soundboards recorded from hearing impaired transmission jacks. Because of this, the audience noise is virtually non existent. There is slight 'come and go' volume wavering in a couple of places, but it's very minor in the overall recording. The first show is the best quality to date of this soundboard tape. It's full and well mixed. The second show is even better. The vocals are a little crisper and more pronounced. Both are incredible performances, and rank among the top of the summer tour.
Oh Tramps It Ain't No Lie

Tramps, New York City, 26 July 1999
Oh Babe, It Ain't No Lie (acoustic), The Times They Are A-Changin' (acoustic
with harp), Boots Of Spanish Leather (acoustic), John Brown (acoustic)
(Larry on bouzouki), Visions Of Johanna (acoustic), Seeing The Real You At
Last, Ballad Of A Thin Man (Larry on pedal steel), Most Likely You Go Your
Way, Every Grain Of Sand (Larry on pedal steel), Tombstone Blues, Not Dark
Yet, Highway 61 Revisited, Love Sick, Like A Rolling Stone, It Ain't Me Babe
(acoustic with harp), Not Fade Away, Blowin' In The Wind (acoustic), Alabama
Getaway, I Shall Be Released (w/Elvis Costello),
plus Madsion Square Garden, 17.1.98: Señor, Tomorrow Is A Long Time
(acoustic), Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll (acoustic), Tangled Up In Blue
(acoustic)
The
show highlights are many. As for the acoustic songs, Boots Of Spanish Leather is
incredible, and Visions Of Johanna is sweet (Bob changes the lyrics to Visions
Of Madonna). As for the electric tunes; the funky, hard driving Not Fade Away
steals the show. Ballad Of A Thin Man is bluesy perfection.

Duncan and Brady, Song To Woody, Desolation Row, Ring Them Bells, Tangled Up In Blue, Searching For A Soldier's Grave, Country Pie, Senor, Stuck Inside Of Mobile, Dignity, Cold Irons Bound, Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat Things Have Changed, Like A Rolling Stone, Mr Tambourine Man, Highway 61 Revisited, Blowin' In The Wind
+ Love Minus Zero / No Limit, Positively 4th Street, Maggie's Farm, Tell Me That It Isn't True, Drifter's Escape, My Back Pages (Scranton, PA, 25/7/00)
Great song selection, including Things Have Changed: this is a very good performance with Dylan on fine form and a great, tight band. Worth it for Song To Woody and Senor alone, but all of this is superb stuff.
