The December tape has been in wide circulation for many years. It was actually the first bootleg ever produced. It was released on a 2 LP set in 1969, and went by the title 'Great White Wonder' It has been available under various titles a countless number of times in the decades that followed. The quality has generally been very good, and the performance tells the story of a fresh faced boy just out of high school, who had the energy and natural 'world-traveled weariness' quality that would forever change the world. It is absolutely required material for even the smallest collection. The May tape has never enjoyed the same popularity. Partly because of the low quality of the original recording, and partly due to a remarkably uninspired performance. One of the first times that a young Bob would hear himself on tape, nerves, inexperience, and limited repertoire would result in, at best, this mediocre offering. The tape is significant, however, not only for its historical importance, but also as a standard to compare the December tape. The interim shows the explosive growth from a kid with a guitar to a phenomenon.

The Friends Of Chile Benefit 1974

Phil Ochs brief introduction / Guantanamera - Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie / Estadio Chile - Pete Seeger / Oh Mary Don’t You Weep - Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie / He Was A Friend Of Mine - Dave Van Ronk / Recitation by Dennis Hopper / Try Me One More Time - Arlo Guthrie / Deportee - Arlo Guthrie / Presidential Rag - Arlo Guthrie / California Girls - Mike Love & Dennis Wilson / Ring The Living Bell - Melanie / My Rainbow Race - Melanie / Victor Jara - Arlo Guthrie / Allende’s Las Speech as read by Dennis Hopper / Deportee - Arlo Guthrie and Bob Dylan / Pablo Neruda poem as read by Dennis Hopper / North Country Blues - Bob Dylan / Spanish Is The Loving Tongue - Bob Dylan and Dave Van Ronk / Blowin’ In The Wind - by all / Change In The Weather - by all

The news of the toppling of Salvador Allende’s Chilean government was in newspapers all around the world. When Allende died in the coup on 11 September 1973, protest singer Victor Jara and others were arrested and held captive at a sports stadium. Jara died on 12 Sept after being tortured by his captors. Almost all his master recordings were destroyed by the Chilean secret police. What remains are copies smuggled out of the country during the time of General Pinochet’s rule, and pressed into records and CDs. Phil Ochs organised a benefit for Chile and the original bill for the show was Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Dave Van Ronk and others who were considered second or even third ranked folk singers. There was no star power. When Bob Dylan heard that few tickets were sold and that the show was in danger of being cancelled, he lend his considerable weight to the bill. It drew in the crowd. By this time, Bob Dylan was hardly a protest singer in the same vein as Victor Jara. According to Clinton Heylin’s book, Behind The Shades, he was just helping an old friend. Unfortunately Bob Dylan arrived for the show well ahead of time, and passed the hours by drinking wine and chatting with old friends. By the time he took the stage for his brief 15-minute set he was virtually legless - literally - and the performance remains probably the most excruciating of all his many guest appearances… And now for posterity, here is the entire show one evening in New York City. This audience recording is close to the stage but has its limitations. It sounds like a mono recording.

Blood On The Tapes

Columbia A&R Studios, New York, 16, 17 & 19 September 1974

If You See Her Say Hello, Lily Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts, Call Letter Blues, Idiot Wind, Tangled Up In Blue [9/16/74]; You're A Big Girl Now, Shelter From the Storm [9/17/74]; If You See Her Say Hello, Tangled Up In Blue, Up To Me [9/19/74]

The complete circulating outtakes, for the most part in absolutely pristine quality. Brought together like this they form a formidable body. The outtakes provide insight into the development of the songs towards their final unsurpassable incarnations. It's captivating to hear the sharp edge of pain rising a little closer to the surface.

Knight Of The Hurricane

Madison Square Garden, New York, NY, December 8, 1975

When I Paint My Masterpiece (w/Bobby Neuwirth), It Ain't Me Babe, Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, It Takes A Lot To Laugh (w/Robbie Robertson), Romance In Durango, Isis; Times They Are A-Changin' (w/Joan Baez), Dark As A Dungeon (w/Joan Baez), Mama You Been On My Mind (w/Joan Baez), Never Let Me Go (w/Joan Baez), I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine (w/Joan Baez), I Shall Be Released (w/Joan Baez); Love Minus Zero, Simple Twist Of Fate, Oh Sister, Hurricane, One More Cup Of Coffee, Sara, Just Like A Woman, Knockin' On Heaven's Door (w/Roger McGuinn), This Land Is Your Land (w/Revue).

This is by far the best audience recording of a Rolling Thunder show. The sound knocks me out - every nuance of voice and music is intact, Bob's vocals ring loud and clear and the recording retains a warmth that is unusual for a mid 70's tape. The duets with Baez are superb. The band weaves a unique stew of rock-folk-country-Arabian-blues and seemingly creates a new type of music along the way - just call it Dylan. The solo acoustic tunes are incredibly sung, filled with sorrow and pain and regret and longing. Not to be missed.

If it was any other artist, to do what Bob Dylan did between 1975 and 1976 would have been the achievement of a lifetime.

Contract With The Lord

Fox Warfield Theater, San Francisco 16 November 1979

Gotta Serve Somebody -- I Believe In You -- When You Gonna Wake Up -- When He Returns -- Man Gave Names To All The Animals -- Precious Angel -- Slow Train -- Covenant Woman -- Ain't No Man Righteous -- God Uses Ordinary People (Mona Lisa Young, vocals) -- Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking -- Do Right To Me Baby -- Solid Rock -- Saving Grace -- Saved -- What Can I Do For You -- In The Garden -- Blessed Be The Name -- Pressing On -- In The Garden (*Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica, CA, 20 Nov 1979) -- Trouble In Mind (Muscle Shoals Studio, Sheffield, AL 30 April 79)

This powerful concert is a near flawless audience recording preserving Dylan's fabled 1979 Warfield residency in all it's glory. This gospel show explodes with vocal passion to be found in few other Dylan periods: time for am official release from these concerts as part of the Bootleg Series?

1980s

Rock Solid

Massey Hall, Toronto, ON, 19 April 1980

Gotta Serve Somebody, Covenant Woman, When You Gonna Wake Up, Precious Angel, Slow Train, Solid Rock, In The Garden, Cover Down Break Through

Not much need be said about this terrific sounding set, allegedly the unreleased live album considered for official release way back when. The sound is as close to official release quality as you are likely to hear. The performances of the gospel material are breathtaking, Dylan's singing never better and his conviction awe-inspiring. Essential stuff.

The Child's Balloon

Saenger Performing Arts Center, New Orleans, LA November 10, 1981

Gotta Serve Somebody, I Believe In You, Like A Rolling Stone, I Want You, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, Maggie's Farm, Girl Of The North Country, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Heart Of Mine, Simple Twist Of Fate, All Along The Watchtower, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Forever Young, Gamblin' Man, The Times Thet Are A-Changi', Watered-Down Love, Shot Of Love, Masters Of War, Just Like A Woman, Thief On The Cross, Dead Man Dead Man, In The Garden, Blowin' In The Wind, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), It Ain't Me Babe, Knockin' On Heaven's Door

Dylan delivers a knock-out performance. The gospel material is powerful and biting without a condescending edge. The older standards are performed with a new fire and passion that includes them among the best live versions to date. Dylan stumbles on the lyrics once or twice, but adds new lines as well that more than compensate. The vocals are crisp are over the top out front and in your face. The music is tight, well mixed, and well performed.  This is a re-release of the 1992 KTS CD entitled 'Stadiums of the Damned'. A great release from the start, this unknown Label has gone KTS one better by eliminating much of the white noise, and bringing out the music a tad more to give the CD a smoother, more natural feel.

The Pedlar Now Speaks

Theater of Living Arts, Philadelphia, PA, 21 June 1995

Down In The Flood, If Not For You, All Along The Watchtower, License to Kill, Most Likely You Go Your Way, Silvio, Mr Tambourine Man, Visions Of Johanna, Girl From The North Country, God Knows, Never Gonna Be The Same Again, Unbelievable, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Tangled Up In Blue, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 + Shelter From The Storm, Masters Of War, What Good Am I, Cat's In The Well, My Back Pages, Like A Rolling Stone (same venue, 22 June 1995)

The quality of the recordings is superb and the performances are, well, words can't describe. It's like trying to describe one of David Beckham's best games - they are all so good but when he takes it to another level you are left speechless. The bonus tracks sustain the heights attained the previous night. Do yourself a favour and get it.

Weekend At Wolftrap

Wolftrap, Vienna, VA, 23/2 August 1997

August 23 Show: Absolutely Sweet Marie, Man In The Long Black Coat, Tough Mama, Under The Red Sky, Silvio, Stone Walls And Steel Bars (acoustic), Mr. Tambourine Man (acoustic), Tangled Up In Blue, Stuck Inside Of Mobile, Blind Willie McTell, Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat, Like A Rolling Stone, Don't Think Twice, Alabama Getaway

August 24 Show: Absolutely Sweet Marie, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, Tough Mama, You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, Silvio, Roving Gambler (acoustic), Tangled Up in Blue, Cocaine Blues (acoustic), Watching The River Flow, Blind Willie McTell, Highway 61 Revisited, Like A Rolling Stone, Forever Young, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

This great 3 CD set from Scorpio contains two entire shows from Wolftrap. Perfect quality soundboards recorded from hearing impaired transmission jacks. Because of this, the audience noise is virtually non existent. There is slight 'come and go' volume wavering in a couple of places, but it's very minor in the overall recording. The first show is the best quality to date of this soundboard tape. It's full and well mixed. The second show is even better. The vocals are a little crisper and more pronounced. Both are incredible performances, and rank among the top of the summer tour.

Oh Tramps It Ain't No Lie

Tramps, New York City, 26 July 1999

Oh Babe, It Ain't No Lie (acoustic), The Times They Are A-Changin' (acoustic with harp), Boots Of Spanish Leather (acoustic), John Brown (acoustic) (Larry on bouzouki), Visions Of Johanna (acoustic), Seeing The Real You At Last, Ballad Of A Thin Man (Larry on pedal steel), Most Likely You Go Your Way, Every Grain Of Sand (Larry on pedal steel), Tombstone Blues, Not Dark Yet, Highway 61 Revisited, Love Sick, Like A Rolling Stone, It Ain't Me Babe (acoustic with harp), Not Fade Away, Blowin' In The Wind (acoustic), Alabama Getaway, I Shall Be Released (w/Elvis Costello),

plus Madsion Square Garden, 17.1.98: Señor, Tomorrow Is A Long Time (acoustic), Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll (acoustic), Tangled Up In Blue (acoustic)

The show highlights are many. As for the acoustic songs, Boots Of Spanish Leather is incredible, and Visions Of Johanna is sweet (Bob changes the lyrics to Visions Of Madonna). As for the electric tunes; the funky, hard driving Not Fade Away steals the show. Ballad Of A Thin Man is bluesy perfection.

+ Love Minus Zero / No Limit, Positively 4th Street, Maggie's Farm, Tell Me That It Isn't True, Drifter's Escape, My Back Pages (Scranton, PA, 25/7/00)

Great song selection, including Things Have Changed: this is a very good performance with Dylan on fine form and a great, tight band. Worth it for Song To Woody and Senor alone, but all of this is superb stuff.

With The Wynton Marsalis Septet

Jazz at Lincoln Center's 2004 Spring Gala, June 7, 2004

Introduction -- It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry -- Don't Think Twice, It's All Right

Anyone listening to this and not paying attention would easily make the mistake of identifying the singer as Tom Waits; and the two songs as Swordfishtrombone outtakes! But these are classic Bob Dylan songs - It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry and Don't Think Twice, It's All Right - re-arranged by Wynton Marsalis and Dylan was game enough to give these makeovers a try. One would have thought that Dylan might have gone for a more swinging sound. Instead, he whipped out his harmonica and opted for a bluesy route. It would be interesting to see Dylan perform an entire show with the Septet.
