RHO opens 1H. Partner doubles and LHO passes. What do you bid holding S:KJ10862 H:97 D:K9 C:J75 ?

TIP OF THE WEEK

A very popular method of discarding is known as Lavinthal or suit preference. You discard in a suit you dont want led. If the card is high it asks for a lead of the higher ranking of the other two suits. If it is low it asks for the lead of the lower ranking of the other two suits. E.g. You discard a low Heart on a Diamond lead. You want the lead of a Club. A high Heart would call for a Spade lead.

SOLUTION TO QUIZ

Bid 2S. Show partner that you have better than a minimum hand. With a pointless hand you would bid 1S . You are showing 7-10 points. Missing a K and a J you would have bid 1S.

BEGINNERS CORNER

If you are using transfers over 1NT, then a response of 2D or 2H requests opener to transfer to 2H or 2S. This renders the bid of 2S redundant. There are a number of uses for this bid. 2S over an opening 1NT can be used as a Sheeran convention, showing 11 points and a balanced hand. With a maximum opening partner raises to game, otherwise he converts to 2NT.

                      A BRIDGE TOO FAR

This book is subtitled A First Year as a Pro . It is co written by Tom O Hanlon, a member of the very successful Irish team and Enda Murphy who wrote the book Silver for Ireland. It narrates O Hanlons first year as a professional bridge and poker player. It is a very readable book but it has one major blemish. It contains 9 instances of the four letter word, which is ubiquitous, in modern day Irish conversation and in the media. They add nothing to the book but in fact detract from it. I have been reviewing bridge books for more than 20 years and I have never seen a four letter word in any of them. It is a very good read notwithstanding. Chapter 3 is devoted to Team Ireland, wherein he introduces us to the members of the team, their systems, the development of the team, and the competitions they played in leading up to Warsaw 2006. Chapter 4 deals with the marvellous performance in Warsaw and the winning of the silver medal. Chapter 5 deals with the inauguration of the Buffet Cup, bridge version of the Ryder Cup, and played simultaneously . Chapter 6 deals with his experiences in the 2007 Camrose Cup . Chapter 9 deals with the disappointment of Shanghai and the Bermuda Bowl . The team did not perform to their high standards , despite beating Norway and Holland who won Gold and Bronze medals in the competition. They finished 17th of 22 teams. The book is well illustrated with hands and the reasoning behind their tactics. It is a good read despite the shortcoming already mentioned.
