38 (born June 17th, 1936)

Heritage:

Pureblood -- Descended from Germanic branch of Solomon the Wise.

Ravenclaw

Wand:

Unicorn tail-hair, Ash, variable length. Under enchantment. Usually 10", 2" in holster.

Magical Abilities:

All-rounder Skilled in Enchantments (Matter / Forces Magic)
Skilled in Arithmancy (Statistical / Kabbalist / Hermetic)
Skilled in Psychology and Manipulation (Wizard / Muggle)
Skilled in Combat-Dueling (Solomonic / Dirty-tricks)
Skilled in Divination (Pure Entropic Sight -- Foci-less ESP)

Familial Skill: The Seal of Solomon -- aids in the sealing and control of djinn and efreets.

Physical appearance:

Five feet eight inches, with black hair, straight, and slightly balding. Unassuming, in a bland and characterless way. Laugh lines and crows-feet around eyes and mouth -- accustomed to smiling or frowning, although he typically does not appear to smile or frown much. As such, he resembles more an American-born WASP, and not a stereotypical old-world European / Israeli Jew. Looks older than he actually is -- between late forties and fifties.

Athletic, firm body, in a skinny fashion. Muscled, although you wouldn't really notice it. Skinny in a Bartemious Crouch-way -- the kind that comes from harsh living and spending your time running on your feet. Remarkably fit, however -- maintains an old Tibetan exercise regime that works as an enchantment.

Typically wears pressed suit while working -- Muggle-made, bought in London or New York. Black suit, black tie, the occasional black sunglasses -- otherwise, normal black enamel glasses. Very snappily attired, although not the kind of clothes that would pull your eyes towards him. As a matter of fact, his clothes have been enchanted so that people will not normally pay attention to him -- a form of psychological 'cloaking'. Has a wand and an old NYPD-issue Beretta semiautomatic hidden in his clothes -- doesn't look like he uses both often..

When not on duty, normal Muggle outfit -- jeans, slacks, collared shirts, work shoes. Dresses like an accountant off-duty. Outfit designed to scream "underestimate me"!

Family:

Old Germanic branch of Solomon the Wise. Widely spread among Old European Jewish community, located both in London and New York. Jacob is considered a 'disgrace' to the New York side, however -- "why didn't he decide to become a bannker, like his father?"

Father: Rebbe Franz Weissman -- Gringotts, New York.
Mother: Gerda Weissman -- housewife.

Cousins: Herschel Krause -- Ministry of Magic.

Background:

"Me? I'm a myth." -- to Arcadi Dewclaw, Dark Arts magus, before incarceration.

"My only duty is to the people I represent, Dumbledore. I've spent my life serving faceless strangers. How is this any different?" -- to Albus Dumbledore, August 1965.

One of the most fearsome Ministry of Magic's Department of Mysteries' operatives, Jacob Weissman is considered one of Bartemius Crouch's most efficient, if the most understated, Investigator.

He officially works under Bartermius Crouch, although his superiors, by dint of the Ministry of Magic's labyrinthine organization, lie within the Department of Mysteries.

Unlike many of the Department of Mysteries Operatives, Jacob seemingly is free of any of Voldemort's corruptive influence, although he has been seen in contact with elements within that organization. As it is, he plays a double role -- as a Magical Investigator, and as, perhaps, a mole within Voldemort's outer circle.

Born during the eve of World War II to Franz and Gerda Weissman, and spent thirteen years in New York before moving to Britain, to train under Master Albus Dumbledore in Hogwarts. Excelled in mathematical, psychological and enchantment magics, and graduating thirteenth in class. When seeing this, along with other portents, his father decided that maybe banking was not such a good idea for his only son, and ordered him to join the Ministry.

Jacob obeyed, although he now resents his father's decision. He has been working in the Ministry for almost 18 years, five years within the Department of International Cooperation (as liason to the Israeli magical government), five within the Department of Magical Law (as an Adjuntant of Law), five years within the Department of Magical Enforcement (as an Junior Investigator, later Divitionary Investigator, under Barty Crouch) and three within the Department of Mysteries, as a departmental loan. He hasn't enjoyed his last three years.

He's never been known to obey orders or swear loyalty to anyone -- he barely gets along with Bartemious Crouch, and his fellow Ministry of Magic co-workers consider him as little more as a rogue agent. Rogue agent or not, he often follows his own rules, disdaining routes to power mainly to find those who harm innocents.

What he does to most of those he finds is well-known. He lets Aurors like Moody deal with them. It's noted that he never sends any of his marks to amiable and popular Aurors like Longbottom.

There are a few, however, who simply disappear...

Occupation:

Officially -- Divinatory Investigator, working under Barty Crouch.

Motivations/Ambitions:

"You don't know why I stay on here?

Hmm. Well, I suppose it's not an enviable job. I don't have an office, my boss is Barty Crouch, who 'disapproves' of my 'unwizardly' behaviour.

I'm basically a Kabalist surrounded by followers of Hermes Trimegistus, and I suspect half of them just sold out to one of their old school friends -- maybe that Tom Riddle lad. It's basically a fish out of the water thing.

Why do I do it? Three words, then. 'Penance for strangers'.

You know what we do. I go to a scene of a crime. There's a corpse -- a stranger -- usually one of these new killings we've been having. No one's sure who's killed who, why they were killed, and so on.

It's my task to dig in, wallow in the evidence, find out who did it, and then... well, usually pass them on to Alastor Moody, who'll maul the fools responsible.

But sometimes... well, sometimes you have to make your own endings.

Does it bother me? A little. But you kill or end a life, and you might save and protect ten. That's what a protector, a policeman, if you want, does. Make mistakes maybe, end an innocent life sometimes... but the Wheel has to turn.

Sometimes, you have to make that decision, and sometimes, you can never turn back. It's a sin, but you have to deal with it or go mad. Sometimes you commit yourself, and sometimes, someone out there dies for what you did or failed to.

Does it bother you? That burden?"
