Web Addresses for General Theory

SOSIG - Social Science Information Gateway - The best place to start with a literature review is with one of the large, authoritative “portals” (gateways), which have done much of the work of gathering existing links to other, more specific sites. I particularly recommend the UK’s “social science information gateway” (which has links to far more than just UK sites). It is user-friendly, containing both short summaries of the included sites and direct links to them. It should be noted that there may be other domains in the general SOSIG site which may be of relevance to practicing sociologists (e.g “women’s studies”, “statistics” and “education” all have separate domains and may also include a great deal of information relevant to participants).

Allyn and Bacon Sociology Links - Allyn and Bacon maintains a page of general sociology links, including one for theory. It is heavily influenced by cultural studies and postmodernism.

A Sociological Tour Through Cyberspace - Michael Kearl has created an award-winning sociological web site. While this site will be of general interest to most sociologists, Kearl has included a fairly exhaustive theory link. It encompasses Marx and Lenin, phenomenology, Durkheim, Simmel, and links to theory courses and journals.

Sociosite - Sociosite, maintained at the University of Amsterdam, is a comprehensive site dedicated to the general field of sociology. It contains a theory link under subject areas that encompasses anomie, Marxism, Chaos Theory, Network Theory, Ethnomethodology, Rational Choice, Game Theory, Sociobiology, Symbolic Interactionism, Sociolinguistics, and Knowledge. Under the heading Sociologists, there is a list of the "Dead and Very Much Alive".

Explore academics’ web-sites - e.g., Rogers Brubaker - A great number of academics now put links to their academic articles on-line, so if you know that you are looking for work by a particular author, you might want to see if he/she has a personal web-site and whether materials are posted there. An illustrative example is Rogers Brubaker, who will feature heavily in my course, whose web-site contains links to a large number of his academic papers. Academics’ own web-sites can often also be useful indicators of relevant literature to read, especially if they contain links to other specialized sites.

Web of Knowledge - For identifying literature in journals that has been published relevant to one’s field, the web of science is excellent. This provides information on (and often abstracts of) all articles that have been archived in academic journals in a massive range of fields. The web-site can take some getting used to, since it is a very powerful engine and can end up returning hundreds of article links if you do not refine your search correctly. But it is also extremely useful as a way of keeping up-to-date in your field. The “web” idea is also well-developed. It is possible to identify articles that are of interest to you, and from those articles identify all of the times that a) this article is cited by other authors, and b) find the links to articles that are mentioned in the original article’s bibliography. Students are welcome to use my colleague's login and password in order to be able to access the site, and I highly recommend it as a research tool. It should be noted that it does not (unlike JSTOR, to which I unfortunately don’t have access here) provide the option of down-loading texts in full, but it is probably the most efficient way of finding out what has been published in a particular field. Social Research Online - Given the difficulties of accessing hard copies of journals in Central Asia, participants should be encouraged to include e-journals in their literature reviews. Thankfully, there is an increasing number of peer-reviewed on-line journals in the social sciences. The directory of open access journals is a very good place to start for finding out about what is available in this ever-expanding sphere.

Electronic Journal of Sociology - Another on-line social science journal

Directory of Open Access Journals - Open access journals in sociology

Central Eurasian Studies Dissertations - Given that most summer school participants are doing research on Central Asia, the Central Eurasian Studies Web-site, and especially its information on dissertations published in the field of Central Eurasian Studies, are extremely useful. This site also acts as a good way for getting directly in touch with people who have been doing work in similar areas.

Web Addresses for Classical Theory

He also covers Durkheim's ideas on anomie, suicide, religion, solidarity, division of labor, crime, in addition to assorted other topics (e.g. altruism, authority, bureaucracy). There is a bibliography with primary and secondary sources, and links to several websites.

In addition, writers that are pertinent to Marxism (and sociological theory) (e.g. Sarte, Goldman, Althusser), are also included.

Verstehen: Max Weber's Home Page: A Site for Undergraduates - Frank Elwell has created an impressive site to help undergraduates understand the "basics" of Weberian theory. He has included explanations of ideal types, social action, bureaucracy, rationalization, irrationality, and authority. He has included quotes from Weber on such topics as the Protestant Ethic, rationalization, and sociology. He has included Weber's debates with Marx's ghost in terms of rationalization vs. alienation, and capitalism vs. socialism.

Web Addresses for Modern and Postmodern Theory

Center for Advanced Research in Phenomenology - While this site is primarily for professional phenomenologists, it does include an very understandable description of what phenomenology entails. It also includes major thinkers in the history of the field (Husserl, Schutz, Gadamer, Heidegger, etc.), as well as various photographs of them. There is also general and more specialized bibliographies.

C. Wright Mills Homepage - In addition to Max Weber, Frank Elwell has also created a site for C. Wright Mills. He discusses the basic assumptions undergirding Mills' work. He also touches on Mills' thoughts on industrialism, the power elite, the middle levels, mass society, rationalization, individual problems, and the role of reason. There is a short bibliography to original works, and links to two web sites.

The Emma Goldman Papers - This site is housed at Berkeley's digital library and contains online exhibitions, biographical and bibliographical information, curriculum guides for middle and high school students, and "Emmarabilia". It is divided into three parts: fields within feminist theory (e.g. aesthetics and art, the body, anthropology, critical theory, economics, science, etc.); national/ethnic feminisms (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, etc.); and individual feminists (e.g. Nancy Fraser, Donna Haraway, Julia Kristeva, etc.). This site is very comprehensive and contains 5425 bibliographic entries and 593 links to internet sites.

Ferdinand Braudel Centre - Initiated in 1976 at SUNY-Binghamton, to "to engage in the analysis of large-scale social change over long periods of historical time". The Center is directed by Immanuel Wallerstein, and of particular interest to those who are interested in World Systems Theory. Information can be found on various Center activities, as well as PEWS.
