Stop Press - Base have a New Website. Please Click Here

We began in 1994, as a small group of parents and young people concerned about the lack of socializing facilities in Totnes, particularly for young people. We campaigned, aiming to secure a safe base to meet some of our needs: socializing, sharing information, creative and physical expression, care and guidance. As we developed we realized that the need for creative expression is not limited to any one age group. We aim to unite older and younger members of the community in mutual appreciation. We still hold the long term vision to obtain a community space but meanwhile we just make things happen as much as we are able.

One of our aims is to develop skills and projects that could support BASE financially so that it becomes as self-sustaining as possible. We are currently in the process of forming a worker's co-op. We are aware of Agenda 21 proposals and guidelines and our intention is to help implement them. Our charitable status is affiliated to the Permaculture Association, as two of us in the core group were permaculture designers and we are creating social design systems, as well as encouraging environmental awareness and activities. We seem to be developing organically into a multi talented performance troupe.

Long Term Aim

  • To obtain a centre for creative outlet, music and performance venue,
workshop space, recording studio, information exchange,
    support and empowerment through creativity
  • To develop an outreach project where we have land on which to live and teach life skills, low impact developments, permaculture skills and creative activities

  • BASE in England & Europe.

We have put on events to:

  • Provide a platform for young artists, DJ's, musicians and performers in the local area.

  • Give a focus for younger members of the community, which helps build confidence and self-esteem and works to give them a sense of belonging - community building.

We are currently involved with Street Art Projects both inside and outside of Totnes. In 2002 we created "P-ART-I IN THE PARK" where we had graffiti painting, DJ mixing powered by people on bicycles!, capoiera, drumming, breakdancing, face painting, circus skills, toy making and general merry making. We are keen to work with other groups in other areas inspiring and empowering them to get creative. We have worked with groups in Falmouth and Yeovil.
