The Church and Town
50°55'N 0°28'E TQ750158 Battle has been built around the Abbey, the exact site of the Battle of Hastings (1066). The Abbey was built between 1074 and 1094 by William the Conqueror, as a result of victory over King Harold and his Saxon army. The church, St Mary the Virgin, is located in this special interest town, in the peaceful surroundings of rural East Sussex. There has been a church at the site since Abbot Ralph built a small church in 1115. In the church, there is a magnificent Romanesque nave, a Norman font with medieval cover, rare wall paintings of the 14th Century, a Crusader's cross carved by sword and the gilded alabaster tomb of Sir Anthony Browne (to whom Henry VIII granted the Abbey). The church is also home to the Senlac stained glass window, put in in 1984, it commemorates the English and Norman armies.
