Brief History of Ringing (in Sussex)
Full circle ringing in Sussex is understood to have started in the 15th century.
Change ringing and towers with 8 bells were later introduced in the 18th century.
It was at Battle that the first 3 hour peal was rung, in 1739 by a band from Wye, Kent. This peal was probably false (involving the repetition of some changes).
Probably, the first true peal in Sussex was rung at Horsham on 11 April 1766.
