A Bit about the area
Aquitaine
Located in the SW corner of France, Aquitaine is known as the "Cradle of the Arts" offering visitors an abundance of prehistoric sites and ancient artifacts. It is also home to world-class vineyards, seaside resorts, fishing ports and spas. The Dordogne region lies to the northeast while the western Pyrenees rise to the south. The capital city of Bordeaux is the region's cultural center, its landscape dotted with art musuems, Gothic cathedrals, Romanesque churches and distinctive architecture. Regional gourmet specialties include foie gras and truffles
Angouleme
Located on a plateau above the Anguienne and Charente rivers, 82 km SW of Limoges, the industrial town of Angouleme is dominated by the 12th-century Cathedrale St-Pierre, whose facade contains some very good examples of Romanesque sculpture. The ramparts that enclose the upper town afford an encompassing view of the surrounding countryside.
Brantome
Located 27 km north of Perigueux, Brantome is surrounded by the Dronne River. The main draw for travelers is its ancient riverside gardens and the 8th-century abbey, now serving as the Hotel de Ville, that dominates the towns landscape.
Perigueux
Perigueux lies on the right bank of the Isle River, 70 miles NE of Bordeaux and 301 miles SW of Paris. Famous for its foie gras and truffles, this is a truly gastronomic city. A visit on market day is a must. The area is also known for its Roman ruins and medieval churches. The city is divided into three sections: the Cit , once an important Gallo-Roman settlement; the medieval quarter of Le Puy St-Front, and the modern town. It is a good base from which to explore the Dordogne Valley and the cave paintings at Les Eyzies.
