  COSTA RICA
January - February 2001

[ Itinerary ] [ Systematic List ] [ Site List ] [ Bottom ]

This trip was part of an organised tour run by Naturetrek. The party consisted of one group leader, 11 participants and local guides, where appropriate.

We travelled with American Airlines from London Heathrow via Miami to San Jose and it proved to be a long and tiring journey.  However, I have to say American Airlines are comfortable and the leg room in economy is generous.

Costa Rica is a country that should be on every ones "must go" list. It is a beautiful country with the most spectacular scenery and wonderful bird life. Although Naturetrek were the organisers of the trip, they did seem to liaise closely with a British exile named Simon Ellis from a company called Birdwatch Costa Rica. Simon seems to really knows his stuff concerning hotels, car hire etc. and is well worth contacting.

The weather during the trip was warm and sunny mostly throughout.  Our first early morning at altitude, although sunny we did experience a ground frost until the sun was high enough to warm the air.  The eastern slope is a lot less humid than the western side.  At Monteverde, the weather not surprisingly was cloudy, after all it is a cloud forest but also windy.  We did experience rain one morning in the forest but it was never cold enough to feel a chill.  The Guanacaste region where Hacienda Solimar is situated was particularly hot and the atmosphere dry and we experienced temperatures in excess of 110f in the shade !  Moving down the western coast towards Carara and Villa Lapas although still hot and sunny we did find it humid and a gentle walk in the forest would leave everyone with a soaking wet shirt.

I have to say that the trip was fantastic and well worth the expense. It was superbly lead by Mike Dale and a number of the guides on hand at the various reserves and lodges were excellent. I would particularly recommend a guide named Eric at Selva Verde.

SITE LIST

Cerro de la Muerte

This area is in the highlands, forming part of the central American ridge.  We started here early morning and although the sun was in a cloudless sky, it was still cool enough to leave a frost on the grass.  The main attraction here is the Resplendent Quetzal and we were lucky to obtain a fantastic view of a spectacular male.  Plenty of the high level specialities to be found here, including Volcano Hummingbird and Volcano Junco.  Visited a delightful little valley whilst in the mountains which attracted a number of hummingbird species to the feeders.  The area is a must to visit as there some species which won't be found elsewhere.

Selva Verde

Although sited next to a road, the lodge itself is completely surrounded by rain forest and bordered on one side by a wide fast flowing river.  Despite being within walking distance of the road, it has the feeling of remoteness and tranquillity.  The birding in this area is spectacular with plenty of species to view from the ground dwelling Orange-billed Sparrows to the Montezuma's Oropendolas  and Toucans that are constantly flying overhead or even the spectacular Sunbittern along the rivers edge.  A remarkable, must visit place.

Virgen de Socorro

This area is a mid-elevation site on the eastern slope that attracts different types of birds.  A variety of habitats can be found but it is mostly forested and scattered with fast flowing rivers coming down from the highlands. We visited a place with hummingbird feeders that attracted a variety of species and is well worth the visit.  Beneath the feeders, a bird table attracts plenty of other species including Clay-coloured Robin and Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

La Selva biological station

This reserve is huge and covers a vast tract of primary rain forest almost as far as the eye can see.  We spent a whole day in just a small part of the reserve and saw over 100 species in that time.  Species are too numerous to mention but our star bird here was a Sungrebe swimming along the rivers edge as we stood on the rope bridge high above it.  Whilst we watched the Sungrebe we also were able to watch an Otter feeding in the clear river water.  Adjacent to Selva Verde, it too ranks as a must visit place and would certainly warrant a visit far longer than we were able to give it.

Hacienda Solimar

This is a working ranch situated in the Guanacaste region of north western Costa Rica.  The habitat here is a complete contrast to the rain forested slopes of the east coast, with it being dusty, dry and very hot.  We spent one morning walking in the dry gallery forest here and recorded a temperature of 105f in the shade.  Be warned.  An excellent selection of habitats available in the area from the gallery forest mentioned above, to oxbow lakes, riverine forest and marshland to working salt pans and mangroves.  A good variety of species to be found here as well although for me the highlight was returning to the Hacienda at dusk and watching literally hundreds of Lesser Nighthawks and Common Pauraque's flying out of the marsh to feed for the night.

Monteverde and Santa Elena Cloud Forest

As you can imagine this place is at high altitude and is very damp.  The trees are lined with moss and lichens and is also another place famed for the Resplendent Quetzal. We didn't see or hear any although I haveto say we didn't make much effort as we'd already seen and heard the mearlier in the trip.  Again the reserves attract a variety of species not found elsewhere including Black Guan.  It is  a long journey, some 3 hours, up a very bumpy road from the main highway but it is worth it when you reach the area as the views are spectacular looking down towards the west coast.

Finca ecological

Also at altitude, this place attracts an interesting number of species from Toucans to Black-breasted Wood-Quails.  Well worth wandering around for a few hours to see what is about.

Villa Lapas and Carara

This place is seriously hot.  Wandering the forest river trail you find yourself soon soaked in sweat.  There is no avoiding it so don't even worry about it.  However, the birding is absolutely first class .Certainly worth getting down on your hands and knees to check out the birds of the undergrowth such as Antbirds etc.  An excellent little lake at the end of the trail holds a colony of Boat-billed Herons.  The Villa itself is a holiday area and is situated in a river valley over which Scarlet Macaws often fly.  Also check out the river mouth of the Rio Tarcoles as this excellent mangrove estuary attracts feeding Ospreys and a colony of Yellow-crowned Night-Herons.  All in all, the general area is another "must do" spot.
