ETHIOPIA
November 1987

[ Itinerary ] [ Site List ] [ Systematic List ] [ Bottom ]

This is a report from a trip to Ethiopia in November 1987.

It provides brief details of the daily itinerary as well as a full systematic list of the species seen. I travelled as a member of an organised birding tour run by Ornitholidays. The tour was very well run throughout by the two party leaders. The party size, in addition to the two leaders, was made up of 10 participants, all from the UK.

The weather throughout the trip was unseasonably warm and sunny and because of the altitude never unbearably hot.

SITE LIST

Addis Ababa.

The Hilton hotel grounds provide a good introduction to the more common species such as Speckled Mousebirds, Firefinches, Cordon-bleus and Tacazze Sunbird.  Good for the small brown flycatcher species.

The Ghion grounds are more interesting with a small stream/open sewer passing through.  Attracts Sacred Ibis and Egrets.  Good place for White-necked Raven.

The British Embassy compound is an extensive garden and woodland area in the foothills.  Found plenty of the more common species including Paradise Flycatcher and some migrant warblers.  Black-winged Lovebirds and White-backed Black Tit are seen as well.

Solulta Plain

A large plateau of moorland with few trees.  Lammergeier seen and Augur Buzzard very common.  Small abatoir attracts numerous vulture sp.  Groundscraper Thrush is common.  Good area for Spot-breasted Plover and Blue-winged Goose, both endemics.

Debre Libanos

A spectacular gorge containing a tributary of the Blue Nile.  Good for Fan-tailed Ravens and vulture sp. including White-headed Vulture and Lammergeier.  Slender-billed Chestnut-winged Starlings common.  Woodland and surrounding area also good with Golden-backed Woodpecker and Abyssinian Black Wheatear.

Ambagida and Bishoftu Crater Lakes

Two lakes formed in the cones of extinct volcanoes.  Ambagida is not particularly good as the water is very deep and fairly infertile, although the surrounding crater area can be productive.  Bishoftu is more interesting as it attracts plenty of waterfowl species.  Surrounding scrub is also good for buntings and larks.

Debre Zeit

Another extinct volcanic crater,  with a hotel perched on its rim.  An excellent general site for water birds and woodlands species.  Well worth spending time both birding the rim of the crater, hotel gardens and descending down inside the crater to the waters edge.  Particularly good for barbets.  Bat Hawk seen at dusk so it's worth being out late.

Lake Basaaka

A small shallow looking lake that fringes either side of the main road from Addis Ababa out towards the Awash national park.  Nile Crocodiles present as well as plenty of waders.  Small charadrius plovers as well as stints present.  Good area for both Chanting goshawks although the Dark Chanting species is common almost everywhere.

Awash National Park

A fairly large park with a scattering of interesting animal species, including both Greater and Lesser Kudu, Swayne's Hartebeeest and Soemmering's Gazelles.  An arid area with plenty of dust so remember to shut your windows when ever your vehicle stops as you will be covered in the stuff.   A caravan park type lodge with a central restaurant area perched on the edge of a gorge overlooking the Awash river gives a superb setting to have your meals, but watch out for the Olive Baboons.  The park provides plenty of opportunity to look for raptors of all kinds with specialities such as Swallow-tailed Kite and Pygmy Falcon fairly common.  Also an excellent place to look for various Sandgrouse species as these come down to the edge of the Awash river to drink at both dawn and dusk.  However, they can quite often be seen along the edges of the parks tracks.  Good also for Bustard species.

Filoha Hot Springs

Situated in the northern part of of the Awash National Park, attracts many of the birds mentioned above although with small pools of water nearby, it does attract egrets, herons and waders as well.

Koka Dam

A large area of water on the main road south from Addis Ababa to the rift valley lakes.  Attracts all the usual waders, waterfowl and herons etc.

Lake Zwai

A large reed fringed lake again by the main road.  As above, attracts most water birds with numbers of Pelicans, ducks in greater numbers than the previous lake.

Lake Langano

A large lake with associated lodge.  Again most water birds present but we were able to witness an enormous movement of Yellow Wagtails and their associated flava relations.  Witnessed the birds passing for over half an hour at a rate of  approximately 15,000 a minute as dusk fell.  Not surprisingly, Hobby's were also present.  Good area for Red-billed Hornbills around the scrub on the shore line.

Lake Abiata

Ethiopia's equivalent of Kenya's Lake Naivasha.  Spectacular numbers of Greater and Lesser Flamingo's, Great White and Pink-backed Pelicans and literally thousands of waders including Red-necked Phalaropes.  Shore line scrub good for Hornbills, barbets and Wood-Hoopoes.

Wondo Guenet

A gorgeous woodland setting in the hills.  A fine contrast to the dusty lakes down in the valley with plenty of lush vegetation surrounding the former The former emperor, Haile Sellaises' daughters summer home.  Excellent place for Black-and-white Colobus Monkeys and of course the woodland species including Silvery-cheeked Hornbills, Narina's Trogon and Black-headed Oriole.

Lake Awassa

Arguably the best place to visit in the country for birding.  A fine lodge situated along the edges of a huge reed fringed lake providing you with ample opportunity to study most of the African duck species, waders, pelicans and nearly all of the heron species.  Not unusual to get all the heron species in a single walk along the bank of the river.  The grounds of the lodge are also productive with plenty of woodland species including Blue-headed Coucal.  Always worth getting up at first light here as it can get pretty warm during the day and as always when birding in the tropics, the birds are at their most active early morning.  Excellent area of marsh land at the northern end of the lake through which a small river flows into the lake.  This is a good area for Lesser Moorhen.

Gefersa Reservoir

A man made reservoir outside Addis Ababa that is reputed to be good for the endemic Rouget's Rail although we were unlucky.  However, good area for another endemic, the Black-headed Siskin.  Check out the waters edge for wintering waders.
