The Breakin' KCL breakdance and freestyle society was set up in 2001 by five, mostly medical, students from Kings College London. The four medics became doctors but one crazy physicist kept going and managed to keep under the radar of the KCLSU society deratification board to handover to me, in the October of 2003, an enthusiastic amateur breakdance society with a membership of.. er... four.
Two years on and we've swollen to eighty, including all levels of experience and skill, male and female, amateur and professional. We've performed at the Hammersmith Apollo, the Royal Albert Hall, in Trafalgar Square and come 2nd in the Newcastle UK University
B-boy Championships 2005. (Check out the photo's in our Gallery) We've even hosted our own event, Breakin' Boundaries, which last year was a forum for highlighting the work of the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust and the need for ethnic minorities to join the national bone marrow register. (Read all about it in The Reviews)
Membership for 2005/ 2006 is just £6 for Kings' students and £21 for associate members (How to Join)(TBC). This entitles you to discounted entry to the weekly beginners class taught by pro-dancer Supple, whose credits include choreographing the Gene Kelly 'Poppin' Golf advert(When are the classes?). Plus, for those who are more advanced, FREE training sessions on Saturdays and Sundays. B-Boys from Foundationz, Funk N' Disorderly, Abstract Motion, COTMB and the Korean National team have been known to attend these and some truly outstanding breakin' can be witnessed. If you are thinking of joining you can read Our Constitution and decide for yourself if we meet your b-boy/ b-girl consumer needs.
You can view a description of how our classes are run, with a guide to the moves and some important training advice, from the Classes page. Please take some time to familiarise yourself with Our Rules, as we take health and safety very seriously at Breakin'Kcl.
Throughout the year there are opportunities to show-off your new found skills, at Uni HipHop nights, in competitions or on the big stage. Previous members have performed in front of thousands at the Royal Albert Hall and Hammersmith Apollo (checkout the video), as well as more modestly in the annual DanceSoc Show. Once a year we hold our own competitive breakbeats nite "Breakin' Boundaries". You can checkout the photo's from the 2005 event in The Gallery and keep checking back for advertising of the next event, expected in early 2006.
Of course being a bboy or bgirl is more than just knowing the moves. Breakdancing is about your style, from the way you toprock, to the clothes and the music you choose. We offer our members an introduction to the sometimes intimidating world of breakin' by mixing with bboys from across the world who are pushing the scene forward, busting new combos and freezes and reprazenting their crews or their countries at major competitions or local club nights. Just a small selection of our social activities, as well as Breakin'Kcl in training, can be seen in The Gallery. For a selection of b-boyin club nites check out the Events section and for every newbie there's a very simplified breakdown of the history of breakdancing, so far...(The History)
Our website, designed by Faizah with a little help from Spilz (THANK YOU!!), has just reached its 1st birthday with a multitude of improvements over the intervening period. We hope that it makes it easier for our members and those interested in breakdancing generally to get information about the society. If you have any *constructive* critiscm on the site you can reach us by email: breakinkcl@yahoo.co.uk
Sadly it is now time for me to leave University and I am handing over the reigns to an enthusiastic new committee whose details will soon be available to peruse in The Committee section. I shall still be found hanging around the fringes, meddling no doubt, and have absolute confidence that Breakin'Kcl will remain a vital, active and energetic society in the centre of the Kings College London Student Union. So, sign the guest book, checkout the forum and JOIN BREAKIN'KCL - THE ONLY DEDICATED LONDON UNI BREAKDANCE SOCIETY!
