LITERACY
Reading with your child
School is not the only place
where children learn to read. reading at home, or out and
about, is an important part of every child's learning
experience.
Here are some useful tips on
how you can help your child learn to read.
Give time to your child when they
read to you.
Talk
about what might happen in the book before you read it.
Look for clues on the front and back covers.
Ask your
child questions as they read through the book - What is
happening now? What might happen next?
Talk
about the pictures.
Give your
child time to recognise and correct their own mistakes.
Talk
about a book after you have read it together. Make sure
your child understands what the book is about.
Encourage
your child to read with expression.
If your
child is reluctant to read then read to them and
encourage them to join in.
Reading
favourite stories they know and love will help build
their confidence.
Try to
read to your child as often as possible. This will not
always be a book, it might be a shopping list, a menu, or
a set of instructions.
Remember
that there are words all around us! Encourage your child
to read names, signs, labels, cereal packets etc.
REMEMBER
- always give your child lots of praise and encouragement.
We are now using the *Rigby Star reading scheme as our
core reading scheme at Broomhill Infant School from
reception to Year Two. This is a very exciting and varied
scheme which we hope you will enjoy sharing with your
child. Your child will be bringing home a scheme reading
book each week which they should be able to read
independently.
The scheme books contain a lot of information and ideas
for you which will reinforce your child'e learning and
enable you to have fun together. Also your child will
bring home a book for you to read to them and as funds
increase more books for them to read independently. A
reading record book will also come home which will inform
you of their reading targets and will include a space for
you to write your own comments.
If you have any queries please see your child's class
teacher.
ENJOY READING TOGETHER!
