What we did in May 2007...
Environment Interest Badge
This month we continued and completed our environment Interest Badge.
The Brownies have really enjoyed this badge and everyone has learnt something new, including the leaders!
This month the girls completed the following challenges:
- Found out ways to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste at home
- Found out what recycling facilities were available locally
- Found out about importing fruit and the damage it causes to the environment
- Found out about damage to wildlife from removal of hedgerows and the use of pesticides
- Found out about endangered animals.
The Brownies (and leaders) were amazed at how few fruits were available in local shops and supermarkets that were grown in the UK. We were only able to find 5 fruits - strawberries, raspberries, rubarb, bramley cooking apples, and pears. Even apples are imported from New Zealand when they are out of season. We had to visit 3 supermarkets and a local farm shop to find these fruits (the farm shop didn't have anything!). This took so much driving around the shops it probably didn't help the environment at all!
Childrens Marathon Challenge
this month we also took part in the Childrens Marathon Challenge to raise funds for Children with Leukaemia. This year we kept the challenge based around our environment badge and found out about 26 endangered animals from around the world.
