What we did in 2003...
This was an exciting year for us as we moved to the New Brownie Adventure Programme in September 2003.
Here is a monthly Summary of what we got up to in 2003....
January 2003...
Brownies Keep Healthy

To start the year we looked at ways we can keep healthy. This is a challenge on our Brownie Journey Badges. Each Journey group carried out a different challenge from learning about the parts of the body to discussing what foods are good and bad for our bodies.

1 Brownie completed her Brownie Footpath Badge during this month - Well done.
February 2003...
Thinking Day
World Thinking Day is February 22nd. It is when Girl Guides and Girl Scouts everywhere remember each other. It was first celebrated in 1927, and the date was chosen because it is the joint Birthday of our Founder, Lord Robert Baden-Powell, World Chief Scout (1857), and his Wife Lady Olave Baden-Powell, World Chief Guide (1889).

This year the 4th WGC Brownies were thinking about Brownies in USA.
Brownies found out details about the USA, such as their flag and States. They also found out about Girl Scouting.
At the end of the month we joined in the District Thinking Day Celebrations, based around the countries of the 4 World Centres. We held our own 4th Pack Thinking Day Celebration when the Brownies displayed their work on the USA and came dressed as Cowboys and Native Americans. They enjoyed a fun evening of games, barn dancing and line dancing.
These Thinking Day celebrations also counted towards the Brownies Are Friendly Journey Challenge.
World Guiding Interest Badge

There are 12 clauses in the World Guiding Interest Badge. Brownies have to complete 5 clauses to gain their badge. During February we covered the six clauses below:
- Sing a Brownie song from another country.
- Find out what WAGGGS stands for. Wear the World Badge and tell someone what it means.
- Find or draw a picture of a World Centre and make it into a jigsaw.
- Help plan and take part in a Thinking Day celebration.
- Talk with an adult you know who was a Brownie. What was is like to be a Brownie when she was your age?
- Choose a country that has Brownies, make a poster ans use it to tell your six about these Brownies.
11 members of the 4th Brownie Pack have passed their World Guiding Interest Badge. Well Done!
March 2003...
National Stitching Week

During March we took part in National Stitching Week. This was held from 24th March to encourage more people to try creative stitching.
At the start of the year the Brownies requested that we try some sewing, so this seemed the ideal opportunity.

The Brownies tried their hand at some cross-stitch. They stitched the National Stitching Week Tulip design and made them into cards for Mother’s Day.
The cards all turned out well (with a little bit of help from Brown Owl and Badger!!!). There were a few muddled threads and dropped needles along the way, but the finished cards looked really good. We have some great cross stitchers in the Pack.
The cards were decorated with some glitter glue and messages added with glitter gel pens, which was probably the best bit for a lot of the Brownies!!!!
Not only did the Brownies create unique gifts for their Mothers, but the work also counted towards the Brownies Make Things Challenge on their Journey Work.
Mother and Daughter Evening
The final week of March we held a Mother and Daughter Evening, to celebrate Mother’s Day.
The Mums soon discovered that they were not going to have a quiet evening sitting and watching their daughters!!!!! They were all good sports and hopefully had lots of fun joining in the games and songs. We did find that the Mums were very competitive and we had to keep a close eye on them as there was quite a bit of cheating going on!!!
At the end of the meeting each Mum was presented with their Mother’s Day card.
The following comment was received from one of the Mums who attended:
“Thank you all for such a great evening last Wednesday. It took me back to when I was a brownie myself. I haven’t had such great fun in a long time, and it was great to be treated as a long lost friend. You and your brownies should be very proud of your pack. Once again thank you very much.”
April 2003...
House Orderly Interest Badge

During April we worked towards the House Orderly Interest Badge. Brownies did some of the clauses at our meetings and some at home. The clauses included cleaning a handbasin, cleaning brass or silver, hand washing socks, keeping their bedroom tidy, laying the table for an evening meal, washing up (by hand!!), washing and ironing their uniform.

The House Orderly badge also counts towards the Brownies Help at Home Journey challenge.
Hopefully we'll have a pack of very helpful Brownies around the home during April and beyond!!!
9 Brownies have so far passed their House Orderly Badge - Well Done!
Easter
To celebrate Easter we held a decorated Egg Competition. Brownies decorated a hardboiled egg for the competition. There were some great designs and it was so hard to chose one best one, so we ended up with 3 winners!! Well done to all the Brownies who entered an egg.
Unfortunately the lovely Spring weather did not continue so we held our egg rolling races in the hall, the winner being the Brownie with the egg that rolled the furthest.
Saints Days
With St. Georges Day (23rd April) falling during the Easter Holidays we returned to Brownies with a quiz about the UK countries. Brownies had 30 questions or things to find out about the countries that make up the UK, including their flags, the Union flag, their patron Saints, and Saints Days.
May 2003...
Good Turn Venture
During May we took part in the Childrens Marathon. A challenge to raise money for the charity Children with Leukaemia. The challenge was based on a marathon, but we did not have to run 26 miles!! Instead the Brownies listed 26 different countries.
Brownies spent one meeting finding 26 counties starting with different letters of the alphabet. X proved to be a bit difficult, some Brownies chose an eXtra country from the other letters, one resourceful Brownie chose Xmas Island!
This challenge will also count towards the Brownies Do Their Best Journey challenge.
Brownies have raised £268 from their sponsors - Well done to everyone involved. We have donated £168 to Children with Leukaemia. The remaining money will be used to buy new equipment for the pack.
Brownies are Wide Awake

Also this month Brownies worked on various Brownies are Wide Awake Challenges from addressing an envelope correctly to making an emergency telephone number book.
1 Brownie completed her Brownie Footpath Badge during this month - Well done.
June 2003...
During June we completed two Journey Challenges to give as many girls as possible the chance to gain their currrent Journey Badge before the end of term and the start of the Brownie Adventure.
Brownies have Fun Out of Doors

During June we were hoping that the weather would be nice enough to get outside - We have been lucky! The Brownies were able to take part in a nature trail.
Brownies Lend a Hand

Brownies had an evening of basic first aid skills. They had a chance to put a sling on a friend and put her into the recovery position. They also learnt about how to deal with burns, scalds and nose bleeds.
3 Brownies completed their Brownie Footpath Badge during this month - Well done.
2 Brownies completed their Brownie Road badge during this month - Well done
District Fun Day
The District Fun Day took place on Saturday 21st June. The first half of the day the Brownies mixed with Rainbows and Guides to take part in fun activities including football, hockey, silly races, parachute games and old fashioned games. After a fantastic barbecue lunch they were in mixed teams again for a great wide game ending in everyone getting rather wet!! 12 Brownies from the pack attended the day and all said they had a great time.
Here are some photos from the fun day.........

Teddy Bears Picnic

Our Teddy Bears Picnic was held on the last meeting of the term. The previous week Brownies made invites for their Teddies. Unfortunately the weather was not kind to us and we had to have our meeting indoors. During the Picnic each six dressed one of their Teddy Bears for a Garden Party, using newspaper. The Brownies also played games and danced to 'Teddy Bears Picnic' We ended the evening with a picnic. It was a great fun night to end the Summer Term.
August 2003...
School Holidays
Brownies were on School Summer Holidays during August, so we had no meetings.
Everyone is excited about returning in September when we will start on
The Brownie Adventure
September 2003...
The Brownie Adventure
Brownies returned in September to started on the new Brownie Adventure Programme.
The first week back all girls were given their new books and Promise boxes. We also explained which Brownies were going to be Buddies when new girls join us the following week.
During September we hope to have a look at and try some of the adventures in the Handbooks.
Our first Adventure was to find out about our sixes. The girls sat in their sixes and tried to discover things about each other that they didn't already know. We played some six games - The Giants House and Silent Sixes so that they could all try to work together.
Brownie Traditions
During September we began to work towards the Brownie Traditions Interest Badge
We still make use of a lot of these 'traditions' in our Pack and when given a chance to change some of them the Brownies chose to continue using them.
- We still use the Six songs when we open our meeting.
- We still carry things to Brownies like, pencil, note pad, hankerchief, and string.
- We still use a toadstool and have a 'magic carpet' under our toadstool, although we cannot find anyone who remembers it being used for this. Ours is embroidered with each sixes emblem.
October 2003...
The 4th Welwyn Garden City Pack was registered in October 1937. We celebrated our 66th Birthday this month!
Brownie Traditions
The Pack continued working towards their Brownie Traditions interest badge.
Bring a Friend Evening
This evening is always popular with the Brownies. They love to bring their friends along. This year the Brownies continued to work towards their Traditions badge by having a go at plaiting. All the girls made plaited hair brands which they wore home.
The Promise Celebration
Also this month we spent an evening planning our new promise celebration (our last one dates back from at least the early 1970s!) Our two newest Brownies made their Promise. The first of the new Brownie Adventure Programme.
Also this month 1 Brownie Passed her Book Lover Interest Badge - Well Done.
November 2003...
Brownie Traditions
We completed our Brownie Traditions Interest Badge this month. Brownies tried to tie their Neckercheifs like Squirrel did in 1952 when she was a Brownie. They have also made some great posters of what they think Brownies will be wearing in 10 year time.
16 Brownies have completed their Brownie Traditions Interest Badge - WELL DONE!
Firey Fun Adventure
This evening was held on November 5th. All Brownies made a 'safe' bonfire from marzipan, chocolate fingers, red, orange and yellow sweets and some dessicatted coconut for the ash! To go with the bonfire they all had a bucket of water, for safety, in the form of a glass of lemonade!
Remembrance Day

Every year we join with other youth and military organisations in Welwyn Garden City to take part in the Remembrance Day Parade. This year the parade and service was held on Sunday 9th November. 12 Brownies attended the parade. Luckily the weather was kind to us and the rain held off. Badger laid the wreath for our District at the service. The Brownies appeared in the local paper, The Welwyn and Hatfield Times, in their report about the local parades and services.
Christmas Craft
Also this month we made a start on our Christmas celebrations with some craft activities. Hopefully the girls will be able to gain their craft badge by the end of the term. We have made Father Christmas Tree Toppers and Danish Heart Baskets
