The 1/24 Nationals - 2005

The 1/24 Nationals returned to the Enderby Leisure Center, Leicester on 16/17 July.  A record entry (66 in saloon) and strong international representation from Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Portugal and Malta helped to make this the best event ever.   The 2004 event was certainly a great success - no doubt that helped attract such a large entry to the 2005 event.
With this size entry, racing continued quite late into the evening. This is certainly a great venue for slot racing - generous space for track, pits, suppliers and the bar overlooking the track with hot food as well as drinks.   A particular thank you must go to race controller Rob Lees, not just for such well run races but also for keeping the meeting running on time.  Also a big thank you to everybody from the Leicester club who did so much to make the meeting run well.
We'll be back at this venue in September of the National Club team Championship and Production Challenge - don't miss it!

Production Saloon

The racing started on Saturday morning with qualifying for Saloon.  This  followed the standard form - 1 driver with 1 minute and your fastest single run to count.  No pressure then?..... Just you alone on the track with 60+ people looking on and "Rocky" calling out your time for each lap. This seeded the drivers for the finals, fastest into the A final (run to last) etc. The top qualifier was Lee Parsons on 5.247sec followed by Richard Mack on 5.293 and James Cleave on 5.305.
The best presented body prize went to John Wells - with his "Pink Floyd - The Wall" Mercedes.
Racing started with the 9 slowest qualifiers - 66 entries giving us six standard 8 man finals and the first two were 9 man races (8 on the track and one sit out).  With the "win from any final" format there was no great disadvantage in being in that one.  Keith Gibson certainly knew that, and decided he'd like to run early - so he didn't run at full speed and qualified slowest.  Keith's true speed soon became apparent as he won the H final and remained in the lead for a couple of hours. Anders Gustaffsson won the E to take the lead, he was displaced by Steve Sargent who won the D final.  Adam Radford had a great run in the C final setting the target for the B final.  The B finalists (below) were Will Stemman, Mark Harwood, Charlie Gooding, Dubbs, Paul Harwood, Mario Azzopardi, Paul Shepherd and John Wells.
Only "Shep" and Mark topped Adam's time.

The A finalists (below above their cars ) were Lee Parsons, Richard Mack, James Cleave, Brian Saunders, Brian Galpin, Graeme Stephenson, Matti Fyhr and Micheal Landrud.  The race developed into a close battle between Brian Saunders and James Cleave, after a good few lead changes Brian won from James, these two were the only A finalists to beat "Shep's" B final time,  Mark Harwood was 4th, Adam Radford 5th, Charlie Gooding 6th, John Wells 7th and  Brian Galpin was the next A finalist in 8th overall.
The bottom pictures show both sides of Brian Saunders' winning car.  The car has a  ProSlot group 12 motor and Champion Turbo Flex chassis  - pretty much what you would find in many other cars.   If you think he had a trouble free run look at the jagged remains of the right front wheel.
