THE PROGRAMME
The centrepiece of the circle's activities is the annual programme. The meetings are informal. Announcements and other 'business' matters are kept to a minimum so that the 'main event' can be started as soon as possible. The evenings are led by members of BWC or guest speakers.
OPEN COMPETIONS
Occasionally, external competitions are arranged. The last was the Bridgend Young Writer. This was won by Chelsey Gillard, who read her winning entry at the BWC meeting on 13 March, 2007. Highly commended entries were also read by the authors.
THE SAVIKER SHIELD
BWC's premier internal (i.e. for BWC members only) competition is The Saviker Shield. Entrants are required to submit three pieces of work and can win a cash prize as well as the shield.
MINI COMPETITIONS
Through the year, and geared to the programme, are a series of mini competitions. There are
prizes and shields to be won here, too: with the exception of the VIC REES PERFORMANCE AWARD, the prizes directly reflect the number of entrants.
THE GEORGE PERRY TROPHY
This trophy, named for a distinguished past member, is for writing a one-act play. For the trophy's first year, Jean Castle did a note outlining the competition for 2008. Click HERE for details of this year's competition.
WRITERS' DAY
For the last few years, BWC has organised an open Writers' Day jointly with HERE. The usual form is to have a number of guest speakers leading the sessions, and there is lunch provided and a chance to have discussions with others in convivial surroundings. Click Llanelli Writers' Circle for details of the 2008 seminar, including a downloadable booking form.
POEMS AND PINTS
This now has its own web site. Click HERE to see it.
05
This is a small, invitation only, group that looks in detail at the works of participating members - not for the faint-hearted or sensitive. If you are interested in this group, the best way is to ask at a BWC evening meeting. This group is the successor of the 'PPP', and meets roughly fortnightly in the daytime.
READINGS IN THE COMMUNITY
BWC, by arrangement, sometimes provides readings of members' work to community groups and so on in the local area. If, as a member of BWC, you are interested in taking part, ask at a BWC evening. If you would like this service for your local group, then contact the Secretary.
THE FOLIO
This is simply a folder that participating members put work into (short prose or poems). It is then passed around participating members who make written comments.
THE COMMITTEE
The activities of BWC need to be organised and planned, and this work is mainly done by the Committee. Attendance is open to all current members of BWC, and the planning of the programme and other events is nowhere near as 'dry' as you might think. There are 2-3 meetings a year, and announcements about dates and venues are usually made at the evening meetings.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
Other events are organised from time to time. Details may be found on the
news page, or better still come along and find out for yourself.
