7. What's on in Carlton Colville

This website is about Carlton Colville an ever growing parish in Lowestoft Suffolk (England).

The area is rich in history and has many natural attractions having a National Park The Southern part of the Broads system (which includes Norfolk and Suffolk Broads) which ends at Oulton Broad Lowestoft, the Carlton Marshes are also nearby (these same marshes were walked by the Romans in their days here too, so you are stepping back in time when you walk these easily accessible Carlton Marshes open to all the public at all times).

Finds in Pakefield cliffs by three amateur archaeologist's recently changed history. Before that it was thought that early humans arrived in Northern Europe no more than 500,000 years ago. They made such an important find that the whole of the Palaeolithic world attended conferences in Norwich and London to consider the facts, which were confirmed as authentic by the British Museum-the arrival of the earliest humans humans in Carlton Colville Marshes predated opinions held before to 200,000 years earlier to  700,000 years ago.

Lake Lothing is the sea ward side to Oulton Broad and has a public footpath which goes right by small to medium chandlers who you can see refurbishing boats and which is an interesting walk if you like plenty of activity in these boat yards (visible as you walk by). Tourists often fail to find this walk which is of high interest to children and adults alike. The atmosphere of a walk with the sea  on one side and plenty of activity from the small boat Chandlers and Ship Repair Yards on the other side will reward anyone who likes an interesting walk.

The area of Carlton Colville has experienced a massive increase in new  housing development (800 Carlton Colville, 300 Ribblesdale, Rosedale Gardens was previously built as a new estate by the Old Village) and under Local Development Framework (the new planning process in the UK) the first stage of land usage has indicated more housing may be built here.

Vehicular infra structure has improved with a Castleton Avenue Carlton Colville by-pass already constructed West (Castleton Avenue  to Beccles Rd-A146 to Beccles and Norwich) and  more recently a South Lowestoft By-Pass  (linking to the town centre) from the A12 and A1117 at the new controversial  Stradbroke Island on Bloodmoor Rd Hill.

The old  A12 Ipswich/London road by-pass (the A1117) from the Simpson's VW Island at  Bloodmoor Rd- Elm Tree Rd- Cotmer Rd through Oulton Broad to Gorleston James Paget University Hospital and Gt Yarmouth is still however a major headache for vehicles as the Bascule bridge and two railway level crossings regularly interrupt road traffic for boats and trains. At times traffic through Oulton Broad A146 and A1117 is at grid lock.

This mix of old with new is creating a rapidly changing society within Carlton Colville Parish with a new  7,000 population (which is risingas more houses are constantly being built). Services like Doctors Surgeries PCT's have expanded  their surgery premises and staff to accommodate this now. There is need for new infra structure and specific services. The area of Carlton Colville sewage and surface water drainage systems are new systems built on existing older ones and they at times creak-flooding occurs sometimes on The Street (old Carlton Colville). Schools in the area have not increased with the increase in housing and increased population now there is talk of operating a future two tier school system not the present primary, intermediate and final school system.

This website has been constructed by one person who is also a parish councillor on the Carlton Colville Parish Council.  Rod Earp made this website with as many photos included as possible, as an educational website to appeal to school children doing projects and the general public (locals and tourists alike) depicting the Carlton Marshes, Rights of Ways, Broads Nation Park, so that the unique ambiance of the area is shown as it really is- exceptionally beautiful!

Mr Russell Cook Editor of the Lowestoft Journal said some photos of the Calrotn Marshes in Winter were absolutely stunning photos he would have no hesitation including them in the newspaper.
