INTRODUCTION OF SPORTING TANDEM DRIVING The Hereford & District Driving Group will be holding their annual Spring Carriage Show on Sunday 7th May 2006. (Details can be found on their website www.hddg.co.uk In addition to their 26 driving classes, they will be holding a dedicated class for pairs, multiples and tandems. Within this class, they are resurrecting one of the most traditional of driving disciplines, a section for Sporting Tandem turnouts which will be guest judged by the pre-eminent tandem driving specialist, Mr John Richards. If suffiecient enbtries allow, we ill split the class. John has kindly scripted the following guidelines for competitors: Turnout Guide for the Sporting Tandem class This class should be open to any light breed of horse. It is judged in two sections concurrently. Section 1. Harness section The horses are shown in a tandem carriage with the wheeler in appropriate harness with a collar and hames and a saddle with a running back band and open tugs. The leader has a hunting saddle with the stirrups drawn up to the spring bar and the loops formed by the stirrup leathers connected together by a strap or cord passed under the horse; a breast collar with leader traces; a hunting snaffle bridle with the rein passed over the horses neck. The lead reins are passed straight back to go through rosette or roger rings on the wheelers bridle. The leader's traces are passed through loops formed by the stirrup leathers. The horses are driven around the arena both ways at a working trot. They should be brought down to a walk when they turn to form a line in the centre of the arena. They should not be asked to rein back. Section 2 Ridden section The leader is to be ridden by the driver round the arena, at a walk, trot and canter. A hand gallop may be added at the judge's discretion. Competitors may be asked to jump two fences. Each entry will be scored as follows: Section 1. Harness section - 20% for quality, correctness and safety of turnout, 40% for performance and manners, Section 2. Ridden section - 40% for performance, manners and style under saddle. The rules may be varied by allowing a different person to ride the leader in Section B. This person must ride in the carriage in Section 1. Two persons are permitted to help with unhitching the leader for a change between sections. One of them may remain to stand by the wheeler during Section 2.
