Turkey's
only native pointing breed is called çatalburun by the Turkish people
because of the breed's nose structure. The term "çatal"
means fork and "burun" means nose.
The origin of these Turkish pointers that are being used by upland
game hunters in Tarsus-Mersin region of Turkey are unknown. The most
prominent feature of this dog is its split nose.

| These dogs are short haired, with 50
cm height, 20-25 kg weight and have scissor bite with strong chin
and body structurte. Due to their strong body, they are very talented
in partridge hunting in difficult areas. They are also very agile
and quick in contradictory to their structure. They convey to the
hunter that they have picked up the scent of the hunt by rather slow
movements when they are near the game. Eventhough these dogs are one
man or solitary hunter devoted animals, they are in very good terms
with children. |
| These dogs are not known out side the
Tarsus area and no breeding research have been carried out. The only
research that was done on this subject as a project, is between the
years 2001-2002 by high school students in Tarsus to participate in
a competition opened up by a scientific research institution |
