Church History

Christ Church is a United Reformed, Methodist ecumenical project, established on 22nd September 1970. The uniting churches had both been active in Wickford long before this, Wickford Congregational Church from 1811 and the Methodist church from 1920.

Both Churches were very active in the fifties and sixties and faced with accommodation problems, saw the wisdom of worshipping and working together.

Initially services were held in the old Congregational premises in the High Street, the Methodist building becoming an additional hall. The present modern building became possible when some redevelopment was allowed in the High Street, necessitating a temporary relief road - through the old church site. To facilitate this the main developer made a site available, in the town centre, from which we can serve the whole community. Although held on a URC trust, Methodist money from the disposal of their site helped to pay for it.

Stanley Hodges retired from the full-time ministry on 27th March 1983 after 24 years at Wickford; the Rev. John C. Hickmore, moved in September 1995 to Billericay U.R.C; the Rev. Monica Mills. Monica moved on to St. Francis Church, Banbury in 2001, and is succeeded by Rev. Frazer Hawkes from September 2002.

Christ Church continues to play an active part in both denominations, now being the second largest Church in the South Essex Circuit.
