The Cresent Chapel,

Milford Road,

Newtown,

Montgomeryshire,

Wales.

a member of the
Presbyterian Church of Wales

The Crescent Presbyterian Chapel was formerly known denominationally as a Calvinistic Methodist church.  In reality, it can be called properly either Presbyterian or Calvinistic Methodist. It is merely a matter of convenience to call it Presbyterian.  The chapel forms part of a pastorate of five chapels in and around Newtown, Montgomeryshire, which are in the care of the minister.  The other four are: Bethany chapel, Tregynon; Bethel chapel, Newtown; Beulah chapel, New Mills; and Peniel chapel, Carno.  Whilst the Crescent's services are conducted in English, those at Bethel and Beulah are in Welsh.  Since the inception of the ministry of Mr. Edwin O. Hughes, the pastorate has been served with a Pastorate Newsletter annually; the first of such newsletters was in July 2000 and this covered the first eighteen months of his ministry.

After serious damage to the Crescent due to a storm in October 2002 and the need to upgrade the premises for Health & Safety requirements coupled with the deteriorating state of the building, the premises are presently unoccupied.  Services were held in Bethel chapel on New Road, Newtown, each Sunday at 9.30 am or 10.30 a.m. on alternate months.  However, with recent developments, for the immediate future, as from 3rd September 2006, the Crescent will worship at 9.30 am at Capel Coffa (Welsh Congregational) Chapel on Milford Road.  Three or four times during the year, a joint service is held with and, presently, at the United Reformed Church, Park Street, Newtown.  Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month.  The minister is Rev. Edwin O. Hughes B.Ed., B.Th., the Church Secretary is Mr. Arthur J. Taylor and the Pulpit Supply Secretary is Mrs. J. Eryl Roberts M.B.E, B.A.  Further details of the minister and the names of the elders and officials of the chapel are shown on the people page.

Each month, the Crescent chapel issues a Bulletin to all its members.  This gives details of services in and events involving the chapel for the forthcoming month.  Other matters of general interest are also included.  The two most recent issues of the Bulletin can be seen on the Bulletin page.

The Crescent chapel is a member of Cytûn which is an organsiation of most of the Christian churches in Newtown.  Details of involvement in Cytûn are also included in the Crescent Bulletin.  Cytûn is a Welsh word which means 'together' and it is pronounced in English as 'kuteen'.
