CWMBRAN THAI BOXING CLUB
Phraya Pichia Muay Thai Camp extended its pedigree this weekend
with yet another title holder to add to its previous tally of
two British champions and a five nations champion.
Paul "Tyson" Martin successfully lifted the Welsh title at welterweight (67kg),
after five hard fought rounds at KR's nitespot in Barry Island.
Although giving away height and weight to his more experienced opponent
(Mike Regan from Taz Gym, North Wales), Paul was not phased
and showed his intent from the start with a devastating display
of low kicks smashing his opponent's legs.
Even though Regan had the reach advantage, he seemed more
comfortable in clinch and sought to tie Paul up at every opportunity.
The first two rounds were hard fought and very close,
but the 3rd round saw Paul's kicks taking effect as he started pulling away.
The 4th round saw Paul floor his opponent twice with some
powerful and well timed combinations, and it wasn't clear
whether Regan would come out for the next round.
The 5th and final round saw Paul step up the intensity,
and with devastating accuracy send his opponent crashing
to the canvas for the 3rd time.
With Regan desperate and clinging to stay the distance he was
saved from an inevitable knockout by the final bell.
Winning every round, Paul Martin was awarded the Welsh title
by unanimous decision, and everyone agreed it was the fight of the night.

In addition, Paul's stable mate Mark Anderson fought on the
undercard against Barry's own Ben Jewess.
Even though it was Mark's debut fight, he fought like a seasoned pro,
picking off his opponent at what seemed like will.
Unable to have any answers for Mark's superior technique and power,
Ben was soon on the cavas at the start of the 2nd from a
devastating knee to the mid-section.
Never fully recovering from this, Ben was back on the canvas again
twice in quick succession with his corner then being forced to
retire him in the second minute of the 2nd round to make it
2 out of 2 for Cwmbran, and 5 out of 5 on the night for Phraya Pichai!
