Rounded Rectangle: Da Capo Concert Band was founded in November 1997 by a group of former members of Barnet Music Centres who had 'grown-up' and found themselves back in North London post-school/university with nowhere to play their musical instruments. The Band was therefore formed, with the principal objective of providing amateur adult woodwind, brass and percussion players with a friendly, dynamic and challenging environment in which to play. The name of the Band includes an Italian musical term - Da Capo - meaning 'from the beginning'. It was suggested by a (still current) member of the Band to reflect the Band's roots and the bringing together of local adults who wanted to start playing regularly again.   Ten years on, the Band is going from strength to strength and members are currently drawn from across London. However, the Band continues to have strong connections with Barnet, both geographically and with the borough's music services. In September 2007, Ian Mitchell was appointed as Musical Director. Ian is currently Bandmaster of the Irish Guards and is an extremely experienced and talented musician, conductor and composer. His appointment marks an exciting new phase in the Band’s history. The Band performs a good deal of the standard repertoire for wind band (and a lot else besides): famous pieces by Holst, Vaughan Williams, Gordon Jacob and Philip Sparke's arrangements of major classical works; many of Warren Barker's sparkling medleys of show-tunes; popular marches; jazz and big band pieces; and themes from film and television. As well as this repertoire, the band explores classic and contemporary symphonic band works with a view to entertaining and challenging both themselves and their audiences. Concerts are given at the end of each term and are always enjoyed by audiences and members alike. The Band also plays in local music festivals upon invitation. The Band rehearses every Wednesday night (during term time) in Whetstone and is always on the look out for talented and committed new members. Termly subscription fees are payable by members.
