I cannot recommend the Indonesian island of Sulawesi (formerly known as Celebes) highly enough. Not only is it fantastically interesting from a western viewpoint, it is a verdant and diverse island which has several endemics and a lot of easy to spot birds. Spend time here - for some reason the Germans are the main tourists catered for - it should be somewhere everybody with an interest in the richness of our planet gets the opportunity to see...
