Tobago is a wonderful birding island, verdant and rich in wildlife. There are many interesting days out for birders which will also appeal to non-birders, such as trips into the forest with a recognised guide or a walk through the main park in the capital, Scarborough. The high rain forests are full of bird activity and it really is best seen with someone who knows what they are doing. If you want to know the guide I went with, drop me an e-mail via the main menu. The national bird, the rufous-vented chacalaca, is not exactly ubiquitous but is quite easily spotted in forest and suburban areas alike. The herons I saw were mainly in areas near the coast, just skulking around in the undergrowth. The bananaquits are delightful, tiny, yellow-white-and-black birds which enjoy garden flowers around the hotels. Also seemingly everywhere in the southern tip of the island (the main hotel area) were grackles, blue-grey tanagers, ground doves, tropical mockingbirds and bare-eyed thrushes. The pelicans and noddies were all around the southern coast; there is a very interesting lagoon area in the south west which we didn't get to but I gather is rich in wetland birds. Feel free to contact me if you have any enquiries!
