ABOUT US

The Dorset Bach Cantata Club (DBCC) was founded in 1955 by Joan Brocklebank who remained an active member of the choir until the mid-1980s. Early on, she secured the active support of Dr Paul Steinitz, the celebrated founder and conductor of the London Bach Society, with which our society continues to have close links. The pattern of having three non-residential study weekends a year was established, with concerts promoted on special occasions.

In the last few years our conductors have been Christopher and Timothy Brown who have become closely involved in musical activities in Cambridge and London and have achieved eminence in mid and late Baroque music. Please see Chris Brown’s address.

Through a network of friends and enthusiasts in the professional and amateur music worlds (which in places combine) the nucleus of an orchestra and choir was built up, with many professionals giving their time out of a love of the music and a desire to support such a worthwhile but self-financing undertaking.

With the exception of the London Bach Society - our mentors - there is, as far as we know,  no other music group in the UK principally devoted to the canon of the Bach cantatas.
