CHOCOBO BREEDING
When you reach the chocobo ranch on the world map you can buy a chocobo lure Materia, which when equipped will lure chocobos to you. What this actually means is if you get into a fight while walking on some chocobo tracks the fight will be against one or more enemies and a chocobo. To capture the chocobo you must kill all the enemies without hitting the chocobo, and do it before the chocobo runs away. Chocobos are a good early mode of transport as you don’t get into fights while riding on one however they can only walk where you can. To capture chocobos you must first rent the stables, you can rent as many as you want but the maximum you can rent is six.
Once you have the stables you can catch up to four chocobos at any one time, to put them into your stables you must visit the chocobo ranch and speak to Choco Billy. Ask him to move chocobos and put the ones you want to keep into your stables.
There is quite a large side quest involving chocobos. To do it you will need at least 3 stables but I suggest renting them all. The first thing to do after renting all the stables is get in your airship and fly to the chocobo tracks marked on the map at the bottom of this page, as Walking (near the Gold Saucer/Rocket Town) and capture four chocobos. Return to the stables and choose to keep one of the chocobos you have caught only if they are described as an okay chocobo, good or a so-so chocobo. If you get one of each of these keep them all if you don’t get any release all of them go back and catch more keep doing this until you have at least a good and an okay chocobo in your stables. Now head to the tracks Marked as Running (near Mideel) and repeat the process on these tracks, Until you have caught a great chocobo. When you have caught a good, a so-so and a great chocobo. **IMPORTANT** However if the great chocobo is male the other two must be female and vice versa. go to the north continent and fight on the grassy areas circled on the map below. Here you should fight against a monster called Vlakorados and steal a Carob nut from them. You only need three but get more just in case things don’t go as planned.

The circled areas are where
Vlakorados can be battled
Now buy some greens and feed them to the chocobos. These will increase the chocobos attributes as follows:

At this stage of the game money shouldn’t be too much of a problem, however if you don’t have much cash you can use the w-item trick or go to the northern crater and in the area where there is water and roots every where you can fight against Movers these will give you 90000 gil each battle, also a mastered All Materia can be sold for 1.4 million gil. So keep feeding your chocobos until you feel they will be good enough or until the greens stop having an effect. This will make the races easier and this is much needed at higher ranks.
Now go to the gold saucer via the cable car at North Corel and go to the chocobo racing area. Speak to the girl on the left of the screen to race* your chocobos. Keep racing until all three (good, great and so-so) chocobos are at A-rank or Higher (it will be very hard to get them past A-rank though). When all three of them are at this rank head back to the chocobo ranch and go in. (It may be a good idea here to save before you go in because then if it goes wrong you can always reset). Now mate the great chocobo with the good chocobo using one of the carob nuts. If all goes well they should produce a blue or green chocobo, preferably a green one though. Now go do something else for a while or catch another good chocobo that is the opposite sex to the so-so chocobo, train it to A-rank and the mate the new good and the so-so chocobos using another carob nut, If you went and did something else when the chocobos are able to mate again mate the good and so-so with a carob nut. With some luck they should give birth to a blue or green baby. Now this is where you need some luck. If you got the luck you will now have one blue and one green chocobos of opposite sexes if you didn’t keep trying until you do, always using a carob nut to mate them with.
When you have a green and blue chocobo of opposite sexes feed them greens until they have no effect and then go and race them until they are at A-rank or above. It should be easier to get these up to S-rank, If you cant though don’t worry as its not that important. When they are both at A/S-rank go back to the ranch and see if they are old enough to mate yet. If they are not just go do something else that you want to do. If they are old enough to mate, mate them using a carob nut again. If they are at a high enough level and you are using the right nut you should get a black chocobo if not you will get another blue or green on. Now it is time to release the good, so-so, and great chocobos because you need their stables. That the easy part done.
Now for the more difficult part of the side quest. Go to the northern continent and fight on the chocobo tracks in the snow. Catch four chocobos and return to the ranch. This is a difficult task as sometime the chocobos run away very quickly. If you feed them a green they should stay a bit longer but it still might not be enough. Even if you do catch four quickly chances are that you’ll have to do it all over again. This is because you need to catch a wonderful chocobo from here, they appear in about one in twenty chocobo battles. When you do catch a wonderful chocobo and it is of the opposite sex to your black chocobo feed them both (black and wonderful) until the greens have no effect then go and race them until they are at A/S-rank then get back in the Highwind and fly to Goblin island shown below.

The circled area is goblin island.
the island looks a bit like a animal foot print and on it the is a forest in almost the same shape. Fight in the forest and you should come across an enemy called Goblin steal form them to receive a zieo nut. Take that nut and then mate the wonderful chocobo with the black chocobo and they will produce a GOLDEN chocobo. This chocobo can go absolutely any where on the world map. When you have a golden chocobo ride it outside and take it to each of the Materia caves (shown on the main map at the top of the page) and then up to round island.
Here are the locations of the chocobo tracks and Materia caves.
