What is Yoga?

Yoga means union - a union of the body and the mind. By concentrating on our posture we can be aware of how our body feels and hopefully avoid overstretching. If yoga is practised with awareness it will exercise both the body and the mind. Please be aware of your personal limitations. Yoga should not be competitive in any way.

Yoga is many thousands of years old. It is not a religion nor is it attached to a particular religion though many religions use it, just as many religions use prayer and meditation. Yoga is both a spiritual experience and an exercise in relaxation. The purpose is to liberate the individual from confusion and pain, to generate a quietening and refining of the mind. The Result - peace, joy and happiness in a rich fulfilling life. Some of the Benefits include: suppleness, strength, energy, good posture, improved respiration, improved circulation, improved digestion, concentration, tranquillity, self confidence, enthusiasm

Yoga is suitable for all body types large, small, overweight, underweight. You are never too young (yoga is now being practised in some schools with great improvements in children’s behaviour and concentration) and you are never too old - one of my books states “...the only time it is too late to start Yoga is when you are dead!” Gould (1969:6)

ŠAVĀSANA - CORPSE POSE - POSE OF TRANQUILITY

Lie on your back, knees bent, feet slightly apart, hands on stomach.

On an outbreath - Release your hands - let them fall away from your body to rest with the backs of the hands on the floor.

On the next outbreath allow the feet to slide away, coming to rest a little apart with the feet falling outwards.

This is Šavāsana or The Pose of Tranquillity - a starting point for many who practice yoga - we start by relaxing - concentrating on our breath - and trying to let go of what we were doing before we came to yoga.

The pose is useful for relaxing at any time, in bed, or if we feel unwell
