Welcome to the Derelict Miscellany, a website that records with photographs, maps, observations and narratives the author's experiences of disused spaces within the built environment.

There is something uniquely fascinating and sometimes exciting about exploring places which haven't seen use in tens, sometimes hundreds of years and something oddly picturesque about the way that nature uses human structures after she is left them.

A surprising amount of space in Great Britain is currently disused, although due to new abandonments and developments this dynamic is constantly changing.

Such space may comprise abandoned buildings (factories, homes, depots and farms), exhausted mines and quarries or even places that have not seen their intended use at all.

From such spaces much can be inferred about our past (Why were these places built? How were they used? By whom? Why were they abandoned?) and even our present (Why are they still disused? Do others make use of them? How are they cared for and what does this say about society's needs and values? How has nature taken over?)

This website aims to illustrate, interpret and explain as best it can these buildings and spaces, answering in the process some of these questions if it can, and attempting to explore their artistic, social, economic and historical significances.
