Holes In The Wall

Stunning. I'm tempted to leave the review right there, but it deserves more. Brighton band The Electric Soft Parade - brothers Alex and Tom White - hit the ground at a sprint with their debut single 'Silent To The Dark' back in April last year. A gorgeous slab of neo-psychedelia spread across both sides of the 7" release, it was a revelation, quickly followed by the equally impressive 'Empty At The End' and 'There's A Silence'. With the brothers playing every instrument themselves, and also having a hand in the production, 'Holes In The Wall' sees them building on rock-solid foundations and delivering an early contender for album of the year. Shot through with a questing intelligence, it's a psychedelic reel of vaulting choruses, urgent guitars and shimmering keyboards. 'Silent…' is the centrepiece, but scattered at its feet are shards of indie rock ('There's a Silence'), The Beatles circa 'Abbey Road' ('Red Balloon For Me') and the aching melancholy of Doves ('It's Wasting Me Away'). Vaultingly ambitious, and virtually flawless, they should have called it 'A Staggering Work of Breathtaking Genius' and left it there.

5/5
