Gig Of The Week
Soft Parade / Malago - Louisiana, Wapping Road, Bristol. Friday, August 24. 8.30pm. £5.
Brighton-based band The Soft Parade prepare for their Reading and Leeds festival appearances with a warm-up gig at Louisiana tomorrow (Friday, August 24).
The nucleus of this hotly-tipped band is two brothers - Alex and Tom White - who have been playing together since 1996.
Vocalist/guitarist Alex is 18-years-old and he's two years older than Tom, who's the drummer.
Last year, they made a demo which found its way to London radio station Xfm.
The demo was also heard by db records, a new independant label, and they were so impressed by the energy and musical ambition of the brothers that they released the first single, Silent To The Dark, in April 2001.
The band were immediately embraced by the music press. One critic described the first single as "the most flabbergasting debut single since The Strokes".
Soft Parade have been compared to the Verve, Teenage fanclub and The Charlatans, although Alex takes it all with a pinch of salt.
"To people who want to know what we're like, I'd say shitty old indie shit basically... but with the added twist of it actually being OK."
The band share their name with an old Doors album, but claim influences of Buffalo Springfield, the Beach Boys and the Boo Radleys.
Soft Parade's second single, the double A-sided Empty At The End / Sumatran, was released last month and a debut album is planned for the end of the year.
This is a new band going places fast, so tomorrow's Louisiana gig comes highly recommended.
Support comes from popular South Bristol band Malago.
