Empty At The End / This Given Line

October last year, Alex White from the ESP says to me "We won't throw away 'Aerial Roots', we're really proud of it. It'll be the first song on the second album." So, a little bit of success later, what've they done? 'Aerial Roots' is track three on the fourth single off the album. And it's a double A side at that, comprising two songs which are on the album. Sure, they're alright in a standard bubblegum indie ('Empty..') and decent hook ('This Given Line') kinda way, but in all honesty I can't think of a way they could've thrown it away any worse. And you may be thinking "It's just a frickin' song, what's the big deal?", but 'Aerial Roots' is by some distance the best song in the ESP armoury. It was when we first saw them ten months ago, and it still is. Maybe they're so confident in the new songs being written that they can afford to do this, but I'm not convinced. If you're a fan, you'll own the two lead tracks already, so download '...Roots' and enjoy it.

5/10
