Stephen Darby    (abt 1790)   originating in Norfolk

information from Mavis Darby  21.09.2005

More dated 3rd July 2005

I don't think I gave you the full details of Stephen Darby's marriage in Norfolk.  He married a Mary Plum on the 14th October, 1807 at St.Nicholas, King's Lynn, Norfolk.
They married by licence but whether the licence still exists I don't know.
He was from the parish of St.Peter's Southgate in the city of Norwich
and she was from the parish of Lynn St.Margaret.
Where they married was a chapel and I wonder why she didn't marry
in her own parish.  Of course this particular Stephen Darby may
be absolutely nothing to do with Bill's family.

Norfolk Family History searched from their fiche the baptisms
of St.Margaret with St.Nicholas but the only Darby they found
was baptised on the 1st April, 1818 born 25th March, Stephen son
of James and Sophia Darby, High Street Lynn, Surgeon.

Nothing to do with Bill's lot I am sure as his Stephen Darby's
occupation was given as a lime burner.
In their index to the 1841 census in Broad Street, King's Lynn
an Ann Darby 40 and then just the signY, William Darby 9 Y
and Edward Darby 12 Y.
No mention of whether she was a widow or any other details.

Now to look for Family links!

27th June 05

I was very pleased that you had the 1891 census details for Bill's
 grandfather, John Darby.
Nobody knew in the family that there was an earlier child as Bill
thought his father, William was the first-born baby but as he died
when Bill was only seven there wasn't much family history to talk
about and John Darby himself died the same year as his son.
