Welcome to The Enlightened Tory, a new online magazine/newspaper for real people ...... to read, and to write for. Yes, that's right. Unlike the printed press, we welcome your contributions - see our guidelines for contributors in Write an Article for Enlightened Tory - but, unfortunately, unlike the printed press, we are unable to pay you for your contributions.
All newspapers take a political stance and, as you can guess from our title, ours is to the right of British politics. We do not, however, intend to follow slavishly every tenet and whim from Conservative Central Office (nor do the printed right wing newspapers, like the Daily Telegraph, for the that matter) and, if .... when ..... we feel Conservative Party policy is wrong or ill-advised, we shall say so emphatically . We do not receive any funding from the Conservative Party nor from any other benefactors, personal, or industrial. We sincerely hope that the cost of running this online newspaper will be minimal.
We have never believed that the left has the monopoly on compassion, and I hope that the articles we carry will reflect this. As right wingers, we recognise people as individuals, not as various stereotyped "classes" engaged in "class conflict". Also, very importantly, unlike Alastair Campbell, we are not afraid to mention God!
We are unlikely to be able to present our readers with earth-scattering, ground-breaking, scoops. Feature articles, we believe, are going to be our strength, but it all depends on you and your contributions. If you don't feel like writing us a whole article, get your point across in a short Email to the Editor . A little note, however, to paid journalists of printed newspapers: we don't mind if you refer to material in this online newspaper, provided you state clearly that you read it first in The Enlightened Tory, and you quote the bye-line of the author and our URL.
Hope you find the first issue interesting. It has been written entirely by your over-worked editor. Do read about The Other Enlightened Tories. Yes, we know that all Tories are, by definition, enlightened, but this lot had a reputation for being even more enlightened than most. Your over-worked editor is also hoping, soon, to build some pages on Tories in Fiction, but don't follow the link yet, because there is nothing there at the moment.
We must end with an urgent plea - your editor is, by inclination, a writer, not an artist. Her art teachers at grammar school, a long time ago, urged her unhesitatingly to take any O level other than art. Is there an artist reading this who could provide some original artwork to liven up these pages? Please contact us URGENTLY!
