Aztec
Set
in an Aztec village on the Amazon river, contestants have to do
aztecy games, like shoot things at a God, collecting the crystal
from sand mazes etc. The floor was sand covered, with the cells
each side of the zone. The contestants entered the Zone via the
Amazon River using canoes to paddle up river. Rick claimed the river
was piranha infested. He sometimes wore a poncho, a silly hat, and
put on a dreadful 'amigos' accent to amuse us all. The contestants
looked at him strangely! I don't think some of them knew what to
make of him.

Richard
often put on sunglasses and sunbathed, and mentioned that Mumsey
made the gargoyles used as timers. He made sandcastles in one episode.

Futuristic
To
get into the Zone, the team had to answer a question from the computer
on something scientific or mathematical. I've never seen a team
get the question wrong, so I don't know what would happen if they
did. Set in space, Futuristic had a computer in charge of the games.
In the first series Rick talked to the computer and answered as
the computer. The producers saw the funny side and later on provided
the computer with a voice.

Ed
T-P called the computer 'Barbara' and was always chatting 'her'
up. Richard used to argue with it, and was always telling it to
stop moving the monitors about

My
favourite Zone! This is where Richard, Mumsey and Ralph the Butler
lived. It was designed like a castle, and had games based around
that idea. Mumsey was a fortune teller in the first series, whom
Richard called 'Mumsey' one day and it stuck. Contestants had to
answer a riddle or mental task to win the crystal from her. Rick
played the innocent son very well, often going on about Mumsey liking
this or that, or her drinking problem, or hinting at an affair with
Ralph the Butler (whom we never meet).

Mumsey
went
on holiday with Duane the New Age Biker during series 3, so Auntie
Sabrina took over*, but Mumsey returned for series 4. Sandra Caron
played both Mumsey and Auntie Sabrina.
*(who
had just returned from Bratislava after being trapped there on a
school trip when the communist takeover happened in the 30's. Or
something like that! More Richard bollocks! :))

Sometimes
Rick mentioned his 'Dad', who owned the suit of amour in the hallway
of Medieval, but he had died or something years ago. I dread to
think...
The
'Crystal Maze' reason why Rick was leaving was that Mumsey was
going to live with Duane the New Age Biker in California, and
'a boys place is at his Mother's side'.

In
series 3 and 4 Richard often played a musical instrument in this
zone during some of the more boring games. He usually carried a
harmonica with him anyway to entertain us when the show slowed down
a bit or he was bored. ('Oooh, time for some excitement music').
One of my housemates gave me a harmonica for Christmas; I think
they were taking the piss. They soon regretted giving me a harmonica
though... :)

The
table in the middle of the zone often had something on it, such
as food, drink, Ricky's pocket money and once they had a Scalectrix
set! Richard had a race with one of the contestants until the
cars fell off going round a curve. Rick also had to frequently
brush cobwebs off dusty contestants.

Industrial
Zone (series 1-3)
'Enter
At Your Own Risk' says the sign at the entrance to Industrial.
H'mmm, reminiscent of anything else Richard has been in?

Richard
claimed the games were made here. The games themselves were usually
technical problems or a maze game. The zone had lots of corrugated
iron walls and girders and things in it. Contestants got in by
climbing over or opening an iron gate. They would struggle a bit,
then Richard would say 'Gosh! Could this be a key over here?'
Ocean
Zone (series 4-6)
According
to Rick, one day as he was cleaning the drains out in Medieval,
he found the SS Atlantis and decided to restore it. The ship was
designed like an old fashioned liner with a central 'posh' area
(complete with sofa and wood panels), and around the sides were
metal gang-ways. The games here were often wet, and soggy contestants
got sent to the boiler room for Mumsey to dry them out.
Ed
claimed the ship had been sunk during a war, and was trapped in
an air bubble. Only the ships cat (Starbuck) had survived, and
still lived there. Although we never see Starbuck. Ed had a projector
and showed some old film of the ship sometimes, or entertained
us with whatever he'd found in the hold.
