OUR PRINCIPLES

Sport for All

We will do whatever we can to get as many people as possible playing and enjoying korfball, at whatever level they wish.

Communication

We will make every effort to communicate effectively.  Please do ask if you do not understand anything.  Email, via the e-mail addresses given below, and our web-site, www.exeterkorfball.co.uk, are the principal means of communication within the Club.

Respect

Everyone brings different strengths, skills and experience to the club; everyone is important.  We are grateful that some people make the sport possible by coaching and refereeing games.

Selection

In a competitive environment selection can be a very difficult and unrewarding task!  If you have queries regarding your selection for a team please ask a member of the Selection Committee.  We will not discuss your selection with anyone except you.

THE SPORT

Korfball is an exciting mixed-sex team sport that is increasing in popularity throughout the world.  It was the brainchild of a Dutch school teacher, Nico Broekhusen, who founded the sport in 1902.  Broekhusen searched far and wide for a team sport that both the boys and girls in his school could play together on equal terms, but without success.  He therefore chose to develop a sport of his own that would encourage teamwork and co-operation.  It really is a top sport, and one that is played in a good spirit!

The word 'Korf' is simply Dutch for 'basket'.  An overview of the game and an abridged version of the rules are included with this information pack.

Korfball is promoted by the International Korfball Federation (IKF) and the English Korfball Association (EKA).  All players are registered with the EKA and have an EKA number.

THE CLUB - 2007/08

Exeter Korfball Club is in its 5th year.  In 2007/08 we expect to have two teams playing in the local South West League run for and on behalf of the South West Korfball Association ("SWKA").

We train at Exeter School and at Clifton Hill Leisure Centre in Exeter.  Our membership comprises a diverse range of people from Exeter and the surrounding area.  Other teams in the area playing in the league are Taunton Soul, Horfield (Bristol), Bristol City, Bristol University and Gloucester

We’d like more people to enjoy playing korfball, so feel free to bring friends along.

TRAINING

EKC aims to offer everyone the opportunity to play korfball, from experienced players who want to compete at the top level, to beginners who would like to learn a new sport, keep fit and have fun.

We train on a Tuesday night at Exeter School, from 6:30 till 8. We also train on a Thursday night at Clifton Hill Leisure Centre, from 7:30 till 8:30.  We have a number of experienced players and coaches who not only explain the game itself, but will also help you develop the skills you need to play the sport.  Regular attendance at training is important for the development and well-being of you the player as well as the club.

From May until July (approximately) we train and play outside on a Tuesday, 7.30 pm until dusk, again in Exeter.

MEMBERSHIP COSTS

We hope that you will want to join Exeter korfball club.  The membership fee of £15 per month (£10 for unwaged/ students/OAPs) covers the cost of sports hall hire for training sessions and weekend league games, EKA fees and a contribution towards club equipment.  It buys you membership of the EKA (including third party liability insurance when playing league games) and your entry fees for 5 summer tournaments.  It’s a great deal and saves a lot of money if you play regularly.

If you cannot afford to pay the monthly membership fee please speak to the Chair, Tony or our treasurer Nigel, in confidence - we want everyone to be able to play.  The fee is reviewed every year at the AGM at the end of the league season.

When you first come to the Club you are entitled to 2 free training sessions.  After that the cost is £3.50 per session.  People are advised to switch to monthly payments as soon as possible and start saving money!

SOCIALISING

We are good at socialising! Hazel Thornton (heiress to a chocolate factory) is our main social secretary, ably assisted by Vickhi Cerioli (you may not have seen her but she'll be able to see you - she's currently resting after having her eyes lasered) and others as and when the social mood takes them!

We try and encourage people to come for a drink after training on Thursdays, and are holding regular ‘do’s’, which we would ask you to support.

Hazel is open to suggestions for activities, and there is already an area-wide dinner on the cards plus a quiz-tastic Tony's patented Fact Hunt after the first league match. There will be others, including a Christmas Dinner, but ideas are always welcome. What do you fancy doing?

MANAGEMENT OF THE CLUB

The Club is managed by a Committee, which meets regularly.  If there is anything you would like discussed or you have any queries or concerns please let them know.  We encourage all members to become involved in the running of the club, and we feed back by way of the web-site, email and a somewhat irregular Newsletter, distributed in hard copy and electronically.

We are continually developing our web-site:

www.exeterkorfball.co.uk - ‘the hub of the club’

The intention is that the web-site becomes the way of contacting the club and disseminating information.  It is being developed by Sarah Cavell and Charlie Hawkins, and if you have any suggestions on how it can be improved, or better still have a skill to help in its development, please do shout up!

LEAGUES AND GAMES

Winter Indoor Leagues

The indoor competitive season starts on 13th October and runs through to March.  League games are normally played on Sunday afternoons, either at home or away.  Most of our home games are played at St Lukes School, which is near to Pinhoe Sainsburys.

The First Team will play in the South West League, Division 1.  Last season the first team finished 5th out of 8 and we expect to be able to develop from this point.  The first team is captained by Melody Rockell, the Club Captain.

The Second Team will play in the South West League, Reserve Division. Last season the second team also finished 5th out of 8 and again we expect to improve on this position. The second team is captained by Charlie Hawkins.

Third team/additional players will be incorporated into the league squads when selected and will at the very least have the ability to play in friendly mixed matches at our home fixtures.

Lastly, don’t be afraid of playing competitively for the Club - it’s a buzz, and is the best way to learn the sport!

SELECTION

The Selection Committee makes decisions about which squad you play with.  These decisions are not always based purely on skill and experience levels - a big aspect is commitment in terms of coming to training and improving your korfball skills.  Practicalities like travel arrangements, husband and wife pairings wanting to play (or not to play) together etc, also come into play.

If you have circumstances that affect your availability to play competitively for the club, just have a word with one of the Selection Committee, email them, etc.  We do our best to accommodate people’s wishes.

SUMMER TOURNAMENTS

Many korfball clubs organise weekend tournaments during the summer months.  Teams of mixed ability travel from all over the country to play lots of short games, usually outdoors on grass, either on a Saturday or Sunday.  Many stay to socialise in the evening and camp overnight, and even play more games the next day.  Tournaments are usually great fun and a good way to bond with your club mates.

The largest outdoor tournament in the korfball calendar is the EKA County Championships, normally held the on last weekend in July, with the venue changing annually.

We also plan to hold our own tournament and have done so successfully in 2004 and 2006.

CAPTAINING A TEAM

The captain of a team has specific responsibilities on and off the court.  Some are laid down in the rules of the game, some in the rules of the league and some in the principles or decisions made by the club.

The Team Captain:

Is responsible for making sure fixtures are fulfilled, ie. getting a team to the right place at the right time, in liaison with the other Club.

Ensures the team has a strip, and that it does not clash with the opposition’s.

Makes sure the team warms up properly before the start of a match, and decides who plays where.

Is responsible for making sure the team is legal.  The South West League restricts the number of higher team players you can field.

Motivates the team and leads by way of example.

Makes sure the match result procedure is completed after each game.

Either writes or makes sure someone writes a Match Report for the Club’s Newsletter and web-site.

Liaises with the Selection Committee over any problems with the squad.

Keeps in touch with squad members who are out injured.

Helps communications between the team and the coaches/Committee.

USEFUL WEBSITES

Korfball is run by people who play the game. There are no professional administrators.  A handful of volunteers do a great job maintaining web sites.  These are some of the best:

www.exeterkorfball.co.uk is our club website.

www.englandkorfball.co.uk is the English Korfball Association’s site.  It has good links to national and international sites, and you can download a full copy of the rules of korfball.

www.korfballnet.com is the top UK site with news and results and links to the Korfball Forums website - lots of news, information and korfball discussion.

www.korfball.com is a useful site with pictures and videos and also the thriving forums community where lively discussions about korfball and anything members can imagine take place.

www.swka.org is the SWKA results and information web site.

Most of these sites have links to other sites.  If you come across some particularly interesting sites post a note on our web site and share it with the rest of us!
