LATEST NEWS MONDAY 6TH JANUARY 2003 TESTING KICKS OFF IN JEREZ Williams BMW kicked
off the first testing session of 2003 today in Jerez with Ralf Schumacher and
Marc Gene behind the wheel of last year’s FW24. Ralf Schumacher set a time of
1:20.831s over 82 laps, that’s the fourth quickest time set at the circuit
during winter testing since the 2002 season ended in Japan back in October (see winter testing times at bottom of page). Marc Gene completed 42
laps setting a best time of 1:22.182s. Although the team tested alone today,
Ferrari, Renault and BAR are expected to join Williams in Jerez from
tomorrow. McLaren meanwhile have revealed a different testing schedule that
sees them in Barcelona for 2 days starting Wednesday and again next week for
3 days starting Tuesday– the team will then start a mammoth 9 day test at
Valencia spread over 2 weeks starting on the 19th January.
Read other recent news stories NEWS REVIEW OF THE WEEK DECEMBER 30TH-JANUARY 5TH ALL ABOUT JORDAN & MINARDI DRIVES Last week contained
nothing more than rumours and speculation concerning the only two available
race seats for 2003– one at Jordan and one at Minardi. The man most likely to
take one of the seats is Jos Verstappen, the Dutchman has been in
negotiations with Minardi for some time and has recently revealed he is in
talks with Jordan as well. As for who will take the other seat is anybody’s
guess. Jordan have Felipe Massa, Eddie Irvine, Enrique Bernoldi, Anthony
Davidson and Pedro de la Rosa to consider while Minardi have a wealth of
inexperienced youngsters waiting to come into F1, including Christian Albers,
Frank Montagny and the Russian Sergey Zlobin. Elsewhere in Formula One a lot
of talk has been about the upcoming ’radical’ new cars. The launch season
gets underway when Toyota launches the TF103 on Wednesday at Paul Ricard
whilst Williams will be the first big team to launch come January 31st at
Circuit de Catalunya. In between them will be revealed the new Jaguar R4, the
team launching its car over the internet– certainly a first for F1 launches
and something to look forward too, and BAR’s 005– which insiders say is a
Ferrari painted white, hopefully a better year for the Brackley team in 2003
then. Also: Renault
decide to take part in the FIA’s Friday testing plan to the surprise of
everyone, Coulthard and Ross Brawn believe McLaren will be Ferrari’s closest
challengers in 2003 and the FIA reveal they want traction control and driver
aids banned next season!

FEATURE TECHNICAL A
DIFFERENT 2003 THE NEW ‘FUN’ RULES Super-Pole Qualifying: There will be 2 qualifying sessions in 2003.
The first will take place on Friday afternoon- deciding the order in which
the drivers will run in the ‘real’ qualifying session on Saturday afternoon.
On Saturday drivers go out on track one at a time and have just one lap to
put up a time. The slowest driver on the Friday goes first, the second
slowest goes second and so on and the fastest driver goes last with the
benefit of a clean track. Limited Testing Option: Three teams (Minardi Cosworth, Jordan-Ford and
Renault) have took up the option to limit their private testing to just 10
days (subject to confirmation) throughout 2003. In return they will be able
to test at the Grands Prix weekends on the circuits on the Friday and will be
able to run their spare cars and test drivers. Tyres: In 2003 Bridgestone and Michelin will be able
to supply two different tyre compounds to each individual team at each race
instead of having to provide the same two compounds to all the teams. Teams
still limited to 10 sets of dry weather tyres and one set of wet weather
tyres each race weekend. Points System: In the past the points systems as awarded
drivers down to 6th place in the format 10:6:4:3:2:1. In 2003 the points will
extend to 8th place using the format 10:8:6:5:3:2:1 for a closer title
battle. Team Orders: All team orders that interfere with the
outcome of a race are banned. If used teams face exclusion from future races
and large fines. Regulations 2002 |
