Education in Fascist Times Through Pictures and Reports

This Gioventu' Italiana del Littorio cover derives from wartime Italy, though the exact date in unspecified. Its World War II provenance is clear from the motto emblazoned across the over: "Vincere", meaning "Win". For an educational document aimed at children and adolescents, the imagery and symbolism is clearly militaristic, unsettlingly so. The goddess of war in the foreground is the Motherland, and her shield is emblazoned with the "M" of Mussolini, the supposed defender of the country. Above the "M" lies an imperial eagle, with its Roman symbolism. The fascist symbol occupies the bottom of the shield. The base of the document is replete with representations of armaments: planes, ships, tanks, rifles, all bursting forth in order to "Win".
