This 1942 Gioventu' Italiana del Littorio cover was published in the 20th year of the "Fascist Era", hance the large Roman numerals "XX" on the cover. A rifle, or moschetto, is superimposed on a stylised fasces on a green background. The moschetto - or, at least, a wooden replica - was carried by Balilla children and older Avanguardisti in mock replicas of military parades carried out predominantly on Saturdays, the sabato fascista, the fascist Saturday. Saturdays were given over to educational activities relating to the state. Thus, children and adults would join their respective organizations and use their time in "fascist" ways. Attendance was well-nigh compulsory. The emphasis was on utilising leisure time in order to instil into the population a sense of nationhood and unquestioning belonging to the state. Workers were even more regimented, through the Dopolavoro, or After work organizations, which were aimed at workmen at the end of the working day. It has to be said, however, that these fascist educational initiatives were not completely negative; there is evidence to suggest that they provided useful educational activities and opportunities, especially in providing for those parts of the population which would otherwise have had little or no access to facilities such as libraries or social centres.
