Just how committed are our councillors to electronic
government?
In the public interest we at FreeCorby decided to mail all our
councillors
(date emails sent 25th February 2003)
using their free Corby Borough Council email address.
The email address format was firstname.lastname@corby.gov.uk
(firstname and lastname as shown on CBC website)
The email simply informed our representatives that various Audit Commission
Reports
were available to download from our website
(a story we have heard seems to indicate they have problems gaining
access to these reports through the council)
We make no comment as to the reasons why they
don't/won't/can't use this free facility.

Dated 26th February 2003 - within 1 day
............................In relation to emails I was not aware I was
on a corby.gov.uk one until last week. I found out by chance. I am aware
other councillors are in the same position.
I believed you could only access corby.gov.uk from the council computer
in the members room and because I want to keep in constant communication with
constituents I set my own email up. It was by mistake I found it could be
diverted to my home email account and the fact that they can be diverted
is very useful.
With there only being one computer for backbenchers in the members room,
for many working councillors it would be a nightmare waiting around at certain
times a day to open emails and maybe that is why some did not ask for the
email address. Some members may not have computers.
I hope this info helps a little bit.
