fans mourn - thegallowbirds to split
The cultural receivers have been called into thegallowbirds HQ, Nipplebelt Recordings Inc. It appears the band have indeed called a halt to their 2003 recording schedule over allegations of widespread paranoia, psychotic episodes and emotional bankruptcy. Rumours that Ubergruppenfuhrer, Muzz Canning, has left the country with the band's forthcoming recordings "Songs from the Infant's Casket" under the guise of a Japanese minor appear to be gathering substance. Canning was last seen boarding the container ship Whiskey Galore on Wednesday at Southampton dock with a one way ticket to the Cuba. He plans to begin rerecording the LP with Phil Spector at Guantanamo Bay in June.
"It's gonna be a sort of solo LP of stuff that's been hangin' 'round for ever" said the ever enigmatic Canning, "but to be honest, I wouldn't hold your breath on a release date. I'm up to my eyes in this and that at the moment, mainly that, but when the time feels right man, I'll get it on!"
thegallowbirds enjoyed critical widespread acclaim in 2002 for a series of live gigs and the ep "The Real Veneer". Though they enjoyed more drummers than your average Orange order march the band found it difficult to continue without the vital fourth member. The band will be sorely missed.

REVIEW : The Gallowbirds and The Woodcutters(9.8.02, Ponty District Club)
From: http://uk.geocities.com/districtmike
A fine turn out for what was an unexpectedly enjoyable evening featuring two of the Valleys newest hopefuls.
The Woodcutters normally perform electrically as "DEKE" but opted for a well received acoustic set featuring a blend of classic cover versions. Their version of the Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" being a particular highlight.
Chatting to their lead singer at the end of the night (whose name I immediately forgot) he expressed his surprise that he had not visited the club before. Relishing the fact that he had just performed to a musically knowledgable District Club crowd, he ruined the compliment by likening the venue to the "Restaurant at the End of the Universe" - clearly having led a very sheltered life in the upper reaches of the Rhondda.
The Gallowbirds , making their second visit to the Club (having previously been blown sideways off stage by THE FEDZ (You wish what, Mike? - Dave) proceeded to prove their credentials as one of the most original & musically diverse outfits around. It is to their credit that they managed to hold the audience's attention with their eclectic mix of original tracks in a venue that can be very unforgiving of bands sticking to a "no covers" policy. The quality of the songwriting shone through despite persistant sound problems, (caused by an under-powered PA & an incompetant sound engineer) none more so than when the band were joined on stage by Stephanie McNicholl for "A Thousand Tiny Stars".
It was a shame that towards end of the set the band chose to throw in a ,no doubt, ironic cover version of the theme from "Minder". Someone should have told lead singer Andy Davies that just like the americans , irony is lost on a District Club crowd.
Despite this unfortunate hiccup The Gallowbirds are talented band whose progress deserves to be watched closely. They wear their influences on their sleeves - Rolling Stones through to Spiritualized stopping off at the Doors.
Tracks featured last Friday are currently available on their new CD "The Real Veneer" copies of which are available from myself if you ask nicely. (or from the band at three quid a throw)
