Summary: Angel revisits Wesley's bedside.

It hadn't been so many years ago, yet it seemed like a lifetime. Then, they had hated each other, but they hadn't known each other, so it hadn't mattered.

It was different now. There was disappointment and betrayal. They'd come full circle. He remembered the beginning, as he stared at the ending.

He remembered Wesley's lips upon his forehead. The whispered words: "Forgive me."

Wesley hadn't been ready to betray the Council. Not then. That would come later. He'd begged for the life of a vampire though, and that had been enough for the Council to betray Wesley.

Funny, how Angel had forgotten. Lost in the fever, with everything that had come after...and yet now, the words were so clear: forgive me.

Now he needed to say those words to Wesley. To brush his forehead with a kiss and whisper "forgive me."

Forgive me for not trying hard enough, forgive me for not being there to protect you, forgive me for all the hurts I've caused you.

His lips brushed Wesley's skin, cold to the touch. Forgive me, he whispered to the silence of the room. And then he was gone, knowing there could be no reply.
