Hi and welcome to my web page about dogs for the disabled!

Dogs for the disabled is a registered charity, a bit like guide dogs for
the blind, they help disabled people to lead pefectly normal lives.

The dogs do loads of thing including: pulling your socks off, bringing
the phone for it's owner went it rings and of course being a loyal campanion.

It started in 1986 by a lady called Frances Hay, who herself was severely affected by bone cancer. She was also a dog lover, who found that her own dog, Kim, could be trained to carry out tasks that she was finding increasingly difficult. opening and closing doors, activating light switches, picking up dropped items, collecting the milk, newspaper and the post are just a few of the things Kim learned.

Aware of how much her dog helped her, Frances reconised that this was something that other people in similar situations could benifit from. she brought together a small group of family and friends, and throught determination the charity grew. Dogs for the disabled became a registered charity in 1988, but unfortunately Frances died two years later in 1990.

The following list shows the breeds that quaified for DFD. The 31 new dogs bring the number of working teams to 127: 9 golden retrievers, 8 labrador retrievers, 3 labrador crosses, 2 golden retriever-collie crosses, 2 standard poodles,1 golden retriever-labrador cross, 1 labrador-collie cross, 1 leonberger, 1 german shepherd, 1 crossbreed, 1 finnish lapphund and 1 springer spaniel.
