"She opened her skin in lines and loops. It healed over into pink pillowy tissue. She opened them again. It took me a while but finally I understood, she wanted it to show"

Book list

Here is a list of books that I have found helpful to read and that have contributed to my understanding of self harm. I will keep adding to it.

Focuses on women who harm themselves through self mutilation, compulsive cosmetic surgeries, eating disorders, and other forms of chronic injury to the body.

Exploring the myths and stereotypes that have led many therapists to misdiagnose and mistreat cutters as failed suicides or masochists. Explains how cutting can become a powerful coping mechanism for dealing with overwhelming emotional pain and gaining control over an out of control mind and body.

A powerful story of mothers and daughters, their ambiguous alliances, their selfish love and cruel behaviour, and the search for love and identity. A book of survival against all odds.

A memoir of one girls journey through the purgatory of depression and back. Brutally honest and often bleakly funny. Captures the feeling of depression like no other book that I've read.

A memoir of a 23 year olds experience of anorexia and bulimia. Beautifully written book of someone who came back from an addiction to starvation. A heart rending and painfully honest account of a disease that very nearly killed her -"I would do anything to keep people from going where I went. This book was the only thing I could think of"
