When Sam leaps in, he is standing in a river holding a rifle. Gunfire is going off around him. He looks around him and he sees that this isn't the 20thC anymore. It looks as if he has leaped into the American Civil War. Is this possible?

A man name Isaac finds Sam wounded and takes him back to his barn to safety. Isaac is black and is surprised that he would rescue him, given the time period he has leaped into. Al arrives to tell Sam that he has leaped into his own Great-Grandfather Captain John Beckett. Sam realises that not only is he able to leap within his own lifetime, but he can leap along his own family genetic line.

The barn belongs to Olivia Barrett Covington, who has Sam shackled. She doesn't trust Sam as he is a Yankee and a Yankee killed her husband and destroyed the farm. Al informs Sam that Olivia is his Great-Grandmother. He is he to make sure that John and Olivia fall love. A little confusing as history shows they did, but never the less, this is what Sam is here to do.

The barn that Sam is in catches fire, so Olivia unchains Sam so that he can help put the fire out. Olivia is so grateful to Sam that she decides not to chain him again. Instead Sam has to carry out all the heavy labour about the house and farm until he is well enough to hit the road again.

Lt. Montgomery arrives to see Olivia. He informs that a Yankee Captain that was wounded has escaped. He tells her to be careful, as he is a very dangerous man. Immediately he becomes suspicious of Sam, but Olivia covers for him. Lt. Montgomery has set his eyes on Olivia. Can Sam keep John and Olivia together, with Montgomery discovering that he is a Yankee?
