60's and 70's covers band

This site is still being developed (or constantly dabbled with), so bear with us. Ta!

STOP PRESS:  Our gig for Children In Need on 21 November 03 was a great success.  We got an audience of over 100 who each paid £5:00 per head, and with a raffle and pop quiz, the total that the band raised for CIN was £750+.  We were very pleased to get such a good attendance, especially as it was an out-of-town venue on the outskirts of Sheffield, and many of our regulars could not make it.  This gig will get its own page when the photos get developed - and when I get around to it!

About IN THE RED

Basically, we are just a bunch of friends who got together to form a band for a bit of fun.

We are a Sheffield-based band playing a varied mix of 60s/70s R & B, Rock and Pop covers. Well, to be honest, we pick songs which are as easy as possible so as not to stretch the limited singing and playing skills, and failing memories of the two aging guitarists in the band!  Having said that, we can occasionally sound quite passable, especially when we all remember to play in the same key!  But, it’s a lot of fun, and we think any audience will agree.  When we say 60s/70s we are referring to the musical era, not our ages.

In The Red includes two IT workers from a leading bank, and two hospital doctors – most of whom would be wise not to give up the day job!  Strangely, the band was started by a friend who is not in the band.  He missed the first practice due to illness.  When he heard our recording of that first practice, he decided to pull out, as he could see that his ideas did not fit in with ours (and to be frank, it was early days, but it did sound a bit dodgy!).  This was lucky for Graham, as he had been pencilled in to play bass, because the two guitar 'positions' were spoken for. Playing bass was something Graham was not too keen on, as he was not sure about playing bass and singing lead, and now he could switch to guitar.  Lucky also for Pete Benson who offered his services on bass as soon as he heard about this.  Pete left to be replaced on bass by Rob Primhak.  Even more strange, the aforementioned friend is now in a band which Neil of In The Red can claim to have started, as he introduced the two guitarists in this other band.

How did we choose our name?  Well, the three first guys in the band all worked for a bank, and wanted a suitably irreverent banking-related name.  The name also reflects the fact that we like to play quite loud, and probably won't make a mint from the band.

In The Red is scheduled to practice once a week, but because of various members having to work shifts, be on call, save lives, or work away from home, we can't all get together as often as we'd like. That's probably the case with most bands.  But, when a gig comes up, it seems to concentrate the mind, and we all seem to find extra practice time out of thin air!

As we are a new-ish band, we are 'open to offers' about gigs - pubs, clubs, arenas, stadiums (well, we can live in hope!) - parties, weddings, funerals, whatever.  We'd be willing to do charity gigs for good causes too, as the band is a hobby, not our main source of income.  We can put together a demo tape from our first gig, if you want to give us a listen.  Our e-mail contact is at the bottom of this page.

our line-up:
Graham Fleming – lead vocals/guitar
Gail Moss – drums
Rob Primhak – bass/backing vocals
Neil McCormack – lead guitar/backing vocals
our former bands:
(without going back as far as our distant schooldays!)
Graham used to play in Midlife Crisis,
and Neil used to play in Voodoo. (photos )

We are quite a mixed bunch - Graham is from Liverpool, Gail is from Birmingham, not sure about Rob yet (apart from Russian ancestors!), and Neil is from Birmingham, then Birkenhead, then Manchester.  I suppose we all have our cross to bear.  All of us now live and work in Sheffield.

If you enjoy our website, or like the band, why not give us a bit of a plug?  Our  website has links from www.sheffieldlinks.co.uk and www.solis.co.uk where you can give it a good rating, which might help us a bit.  We don't mind if you have to lie in order to do this.  Thanks.

Editor's note:
If you see any spelling mistakes, it may not be due to a lack of education.  The file upload process (whether I use 'easy upload' or FTP) seems to cause occasional repeated letters for some unknown reason.  However, if you do see any spelling mistakes which are not repeated letters, that is probably because my keyboard is not in alphabetical order.

The upload process also seems to corrupt the photos, making Neil appear old and ugly. 1
