From Lab Rat to Iron Rat

I am pleased to announce that my first Ironman distance race was a huge success and I managed to finish in 14 hours and 12 minutes! Thanks to all my supporters.

The first triathlon that I competed in was in Plettenberg Bay in 1993. After completing the 400m backstroke-breastroke-float, the 20km freewheel and the 5km walk-run-walk-run I was hooked.

Some guys say it is the great feeling of challenging yourself or finding your limits that makes triathlon so cool. Well I think they are lying.

What was so cool about that first race and every race thereafter is the fact that you get to shave your legs, run around in a speedo and one of those short shirts that went out of fashion in the mid eighties, and muck about with bikes. What more could a guy want, oh yes I nearly forgot there are also young girls running around in swimwear. You just know that David Hasselhof got his Baywatch slow motion filming technique from watching the Elite ladies in action!

So after 3 years of being away from the sport, having moved to Summerless London, I decided it was time to make up for lost time. What better way to catch up than to spend 14 hours in the sun in Florida this October.

This site will track my journey to Clermont, Florida. But you won't find any boring training details and nutritional info here. As the guru, Scott Tinley once said, "if you want to promote triathlon to your friends don't bore them with your 10km split times or your average heart rate figures for the last year RATHER wear your Hawaii Ironman Finisher t-shirt to a party and drive your car into the pool, then people will think triathletes are cool!"

So look forward to an irreverent look at all things sport with a particular slant towards Swim-Cycle-Run.

The name Lab Rat came from my friend and probably at the time Safrica's hardest working triathlete OB. He decided that because I was short and losing my hair that "Lab Rat" was the name for me. Any of you that know OB will realise the irony of his comments. The name stuck and the Lab Report was born as Stellenbosch University Triathlon Club's newsletter.

While I am on about the Bosch here's a shout to John "lekker pomp ekse" de Bruyn, Tim Ziehl, Wynand & Nelleke, Alwyn and the Flandria boys, Johannes, Doc Rabie and of course Mr Triathlon, Jingles Perreira. Hope you are all still at it --- and maybe doing triathlons as well.

Well that was back in the day, the current training group has a little bit of a different look to it. Trinks gets me off the sofa and into training and for someone who supposedly hates running seems to get stronger with every mile. Steve, one of these days we will get you on a bike, and don't worry we'll stick on some false eyebrows to stop the sweat getting in your eyes.
