Well, here you will find out how to send e-mail to your Group, either with pictures (or other files) attached or just plain text.
Although the process illustrated here will use examples of sending mail from a Yahoo mail account, the same principles apply if you are using a different e-mail program (for instance, AOL or Outlook Express). Don't worry: It is not a very complicated process, if it was, very few people would ever do it, yet lots do send pictures to their groups. I have tried to show every step.
Firstly, where do you get pictures from that might be relevant and interesting to your Group?
There are a number of sources you can use.
1) If you are good with a camera, you can take them yourself. If you use a digital camera, you can put the pictures directly onto your computer and e-mail them to your group(s). If you are using a film camera, then you will need to have the film processed and scan the prints.
2) If you have a flat bed scanner, you can scan any pictures you have, whether they be ones you have taken yourself, pictures from magazines, newspapers, or any other source. (see Links Section for scanning tips.)
3) If you are a member of more than one group, you may be able to post pictures you get from one group to another.
4) Do an Image search using any search engine that offers this type of search. (Google, for example.)
5) You can search for sites of interest on the Internet, again using a search engine and 'keywords' to find likely sites. (If you are looking for pictures of dogs, for instance, you might put 'dogs' as the keyword, or might be more specific and add words like 'Alsatian', for a particular breed, or add a word like 'gallery' to find picture galleries.)
Once you have found some sites with pictures suitable for your group, you will need to save the pictures somewhere where you can find them on your computer. ('My Documents', for instance.) You can save pictures from a web site by resting your mouse on the picture and clicking once on the right hand mouse button (left hand mouse button if your mouse is set up for a left-handed person). From the drop-down menu that appears, select 'Save Target As...'.
Sometimes you will find that a particular web site has disabled your right-hand mouse button, so you can't save pictures from it. In this case, if you use Windows Explorer to go to your Temporary Internet Files folder, you should find a copy of the particular picture in there, if you can find it amongst the others likely to be there. Just click on it and move it to a folder where you can find it again on your computer.
A word about copyright. Unless you actually took a particular photograph, then somebody else will own the copyright to that photograph. Many photographs on the Internet may be considered to be 'in the public domain', and it is arguable that if a photograph has been published on the Internet, then there is an implied permission for copies to be made. Nevertheless, any possible implied permission to do this must surely be negated by a specific prohibition on copying that may be mentioned on a web site or appended to a photograph. You may be able to use photographs without the owner's permission and the chances are that you will not be found out. If you are concerned about the possibility of being sued, then you may wish to seek permission. If you do not, there is a slight possibility that you will receive a notice to 'Cease and Desist' from using the photographs and could, in theory, be sued for breaching copyright. However, if you don't have much money, then you are probably not worth suing! I understand that it is a Federal Offence in the United States to produce more than ten copies of most photographs produced after a certain date. Copyright law is fairly complex and you may like to check for a complete statement of the law from an authoratitive source. One other word of warning, it is against Yahoo's Terms of Service to breach other peoples' copyright and your account could, in some circumstances, be terminated.
On the next page, I will begin to show you how to attach pictures to your e-mail to send to your groups.
