Model Fuel : Castor and Synthetic, Nitro, Which is Best to Use?

All standard Model fuel is made of four ingredients:
  1.  Propellent (the stuff that burns) - Methanol (methyl alcohol)
  2.  Lubricant & Coolant  - Castor Oil or a Synthetic Oil, or a mix of both
  3.  Performance Agent - Nitromethane, which is essentially an oxygen supply to speed up burning
  4.  Marker Dye tolerant of the other ingredients in the blend

Q. What makes a great model fuel?   A. The best mix is the one which most suits the engine in your model.
Q.  What is the best mix?  A. Depends on what way it will be used....but we can boil all the possible choices down into a small number of options.
Q. How do I decide which is the best fuel for my particular model engine?   A. Look at the guide below, and select your  engine type and size, and the suitable choices are given.

Model Engine type Engine size Model Technics Fuel to Use
New engine not yet run in 2.5cc - 22cc GX-5, GX-straight (0%)
MVVS 2.5cc - 15cc GX-0, GX-5, GoGlo Plus 0% - 5%
OS, Irvine, Thunder Tiger 2.5cc - 15cc GX-5% - 16%, GoGlo Plus 5% - 16%
Saito 4-stroke 7.5cc - 20cc GoGlo Plus 10% - 15%
RCV 4-stroke 4 - 15cc GoGlo Plus  5% - 10%
4-stroke "YS" engines 7.5cc - 20cc GoGlo Plus Turbo 20% - 25%
Nitro Car Engines 2.0cc - 4.5cc GX-5, GX-10, GX-16, GoGlo Plus 10% - 16%
Ducted Fan High rpm OS91VRDF 25cc GoGlo Plus 16%, GoGlo Plus Turbo 20% - 35%

General Advice: Buy a strong engine with high compression, and lots of power,eg MVVS, OSFX, or Irvine. Then you can run it on low nitro model fuel, which costs less, and your engine which is not really stressed will last a very long time. these engines use cool glowplugs like the tough Rossi C6, Model Technics F4 and OS No 8.
The high compression 4-stroke is Saito.
If you have got a budget or "soft" engine, with lower compression, you can raise the compression, by using higher nitro model fuel. 10% - 15% nitro. These engines prefer a  hotter glowplug like Rossi C5, OS A3, and Model Technics M6 or M7, although when the high nitro fuel is being used, the plugs for the "harder" engines listed above may last longer.

GoGlo Plus is a special blend sold pre-mixed by Green Hobby & Model, Dublin and a few other specialist model shops. It is Go Glo made of 15% synthetic oil, with 3% castor oil added. GoGlo Plus can be got in various nitro percentages. It creates very low smoke emissions, and allows engines to run very cool, which prolongs glowplug longevity and minimises engine wear over time.
